{"id":11789,"date":"2025-06-24T21:47:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T21:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/11789\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T21:47:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T21:47:09","slug":"controversial-hockey-voice-don-cherry-clears-up-confusing-sign-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/11789\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversial hockey voice Don Cherry clears up confusing sign-off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most colorful characters in hockey isn\u2019t putting down the mic just yet.<\/p>\n<p>Don Cherry, best known for his 33-year stint as a broadcaster on \u201cHockey Night in Canada\u201d before a controversial departure, stirred up some confusion when he signed off on the 313th episode of \u201cThe Don Cherry\u2019s Grapevine Podcast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, Tim, this is our last show,\u201d the 91-year-old said at the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/doncherrysgrapevine.podbean.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">episode<\/a>. \u201cThanks everyone for listening. Toodle-oo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don Cherry announced he\u2019ll no longer be recording episodes of \u201cThe Grapevine\u201d podcast. AP<\/p>\n<p>While it sounded like the end of his four-plus decade run as a prominent voice in Canada\u2019s game, Cherry quickly corrected the record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming back next season,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/local-news\/warmington-who-said-coach-don-cherry-has-done-his-final-podcast-not-grapes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Toronto Sun<\/a>. \u201cWe just meant to say goodbye for this year. We always do that at the end the season. There\u2019s no more hockey this year, so there\u2019s no podcast for the summer. I guess we should have said for the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former defenseman and coach launched the podcast with his son, Tim, six years ago, when Cherry was dismissed from Sportsnet, after the Kingston, Ontario, native made a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/11\/11\/sportsnet-fires-don-cherry-for-anti-immigrant-coachs-corner-rant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial comment about Canadian immigrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been listened to all around the world, it\u2019s just amazing how many different countries people download and listen to it,\u201d Tim, who is also a scout in the Ontario Hockey League, said on the season finale episode. \u201cWe\u2019ve had 6.5 million downloads, which is pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CBC sportscasters Don Cherry (L) and Ron MacLean (R) cover the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game. NHLI via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Cherry, nicknamed \u201cGrapes,\u201d has been involved in just about every aspect of the hockey world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He enjoyed a 14-year career in the AHL in the 1950s and 60s, and played in one glorious NHL game with the Bruins in 1955.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He then went on to coach five seasons with Boston from 1974-79, leading the team to two Stanley Cup Final appearances, and spent 1979-80 as the bench boss of the Colorado Rockies, now the Devils.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don Cherry receives the Hockey Legacy Award on stage at the Sports Museum \u2018The Tradition\u2019 annual gala at TD Garden on November 28, 2018. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Then came his broadcasting career, which began with him as a studio analyst for CBC in 1980 and continued for the next three decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cherry became famous for his brash, colorful personality, which was on full display whenever he appeared on the air \u2013 during the broadcast of a game, on his half-hour interview show \u201cDon Cherry\u2019s Grapevine\u201d or anywhere else.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"One of the most colorful characters in hockey isn\u2019t putting down the mic just yet.
