{"id":118010,"date":"2025-08-04T11:01:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T11:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/118010\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T11:01:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T11:01:11","slug":"vegas-tourism-is-down-as-california-international-tourists-make-themselves-scarce-data-suggest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/118010\/","title":{"rendered":"Vegas tourism is down as California, international tourists make themselves scarce, data suggest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sin City is facing a summer swoon, and Californians \u2014 by far the largest tourist contingent, data show \u2014 are partially to blame.<\/p>\n<p>Visits to Las Vegas were down 11.3% in June 2025 versus a year earlier, according to data from the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lvcva.com\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Traffic on Interstate 15 at the California-Nevada border was down 4.3% over the same period, suggesting fewer visitors from the Golden State heading for Vegas casinos.<\/p>\n<p>The number of air travelers into Las Vegas overall declined 6.3% over the previous June. In 2024, Californians made up more than a fifth of air travelers into Vegas, with nearly half of those coming from the Los Angeles metro area.<\/p>\n<p>A demographic report from the visitors authority estimated that Southern California <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasnevada.gov\/News\/Blog\/Detail\/millennials-emerging-as-key-visitors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">provided 30%<\/a> of all visitors to Las Vegas in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>Add it all up, and Californians could be responsible for a significant portion of the decline in Vegas tourism.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism within the U.S. is only part of the picture, though, as experts previously predicted slumps in international tourism across the country. Are Californians staying home?\" data-video-id=\"00000198-72c8-d691-a199-77d94ec60000\">               <\/video>                 <img class=\"image\" alt=\"\"   width=\"473\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754305271_954_\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>             <\/p>\n<ul data-element=\"action-bar-menu\" class=\"flex gap-2 list-none  absolute w-full h-10 top-0\">\n<li data-element=\"action-bar-share\" class=\"flex  w-full h-10 top-0 lg:items-center lg:justify-center \">\n<p> Share via     Close extra sharing options  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A report from the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/wttc.org\/news\/us-economy-set-to-lose-12-5bn-in-international-traveler-spend-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Travel and Tourism Council<\/a> projected that the U.S. would lose $12.5 billion in international travel spending in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile other nations are rolling out the welcome mat, the U.S. government is putting up the \u2018closed\u2019 sign,\u201d Julia Simpson, the council\u2019s president, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The report cited air-travel booking data from March that showed a 15% to 20% drop in expected travel from major tourism sources including the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors from Canada and Mexico made up more than half of international tourists to Las Vegas in 2024, according to data from the visitors authority. <\/p>\n<p>But President Trump\u2019s talk of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/01\/world\/canada\/canada-tariffs-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">making Canada the 51st state<\/a> and his decision to hit Canada with tariffs have not endeared him to Canadian travelers. Meanwhile, media overseas <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2025-06-01\/trump-policy-disruptions-to-travel-may-culminate-at-peak-summer-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have been bombarded<\/a> with stories of capricious denials and detentions at U.S. border crossings. <\/p>\n<p>Las Vegas is not alone in its travel woes. In May, Gov. Gavin Newsom <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-05-05\/california-still-no-1-for-tourism-despite-incoming-trump-slump-newsom-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">predicted a \u201cTrump Slump\u201d<\/a> in international travel to California brought on in part by the president\u2019s <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2025-08-01\/trump-injects-a-new-dose-of-uncertainty-in-tariffs-as-he-pushes-start-date-back-to-aug-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariff regime<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLas Vegas thrives on tourism,\u201d Rep.
