We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>A bombshell new documentary on child killer Lucy Letby will offer a new explanation behind a number of scribbled notes written by the nurse which were used as evidence to convict her.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s most prolific child serial killer is currently serving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/crime\/lucy-letby-child-manchester-crown-court-hereford-crown-prosecution-b2574657.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">15 whole-life sentences<\/a> for seven murders and seven attempted murders of babies while working at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/countess-of-chester-hospital\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Countess of Chester Hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Notes such as \u201cI am evil, I did this\u201d were scrawled on a scrappy notepad found in her house, which also read: \u201cI killed them on purpose because I am not good enough to care for them and I am a horrible evil person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/letbyyyyy.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Lucy Letby and Dawn are childhood friends\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Letby and Dawn are childhood friends (ITV)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHate\u201d was also written in block capitals with heavy ink and circled, while the note is headed: \u201cNot good enough.\u201d But the notes also included other phrases such as: &#8220;I haven&#8217;t done anything wrong&#8221; and &#8220;we tried our best and it wasn&#8217;t enough&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The NHS neonatal nurse is currently serving 15 whole life sentences for seven murders and seven attempted murders of babies while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Times, a new ITV documentary will put forward a new explanation for the notes, which were presented by the prosecution as amounting to a confession &#8211; despite some of the notes appearing to deny her guilt. <\/p>\n<p>Dawn is a childhood friend of Letby with whom she studied her A-Levels at Aylestone School in Hereford. The 35-year-old, who did not want her last name to be published, said the pair were taught while in school to write down their most dark thoughts during \u201cpeer-support training sessions\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Lucy Letby: Beyond Reasonable Doubt? documentary, she said: \u201cAt all of those training sessions, it was recommended to us that, you know, if you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed, you write down everything that\u2019s going through your mind that is, you know, troubling you. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI168014195.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Lucy Letby when she was first arrested\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Letby when she was first arrested (Cheshire Constabulary)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, all of the dark thoughts, all of those inner voices that you can\u2019t silence. You just write it all down on a piece of paper to get it off your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Letby has lost two attempts to challenge her convictions at the Court of Appeal so far, but questions are growing about the safety of Letby\u2019s convictions after multiple experts have cast doubts over some of the evidence used in the trial in August 2023. <\/p>\n<p>The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is reviewing an application by Letby\u2019s legal team, which includes a 300-page report from chemical engineer Helen Shannon and professor Geoff Chase, who refute claims made by the prosecution that Letby \u201cundoubtedly\u201d poisoned two babies by spiking their feeding bags with insulin. <\/p>\n<p>Ms Shannon and Prof Chase, who were given access to the babies\u2019 medical notes, say they could have been born with specific types of antibodies in their blood which can cause a high reading of insulin. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI156526123.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Court artist sketch by Elizabeth Cook of Lucy Letby looking upset when Nicholas Johnson KC (right) said she was enjoying what had happened to child C as she appeared at Manchester Crown Court where she is charged with the murder of seven babies\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Court artist sketch by Elizabeth Cook of Lucy Letby looking upset when Nicholas Johnson KC (right) said she was enjoying what had happened to child C as she appeared at Manchester Crown Court where she is charged with the murder of seven babies (PA)<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the documentary, Ms Shannon said according to The Times: \u201cWhat was presented in court as this is smoking-gun evidence of poisoning actually looks pretty typical for a pre-term neonate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we can\u2019t see any justification whatsoever for the prosecution statement that it could only be poisoning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dawn also tells the documentary about the moment Letby was found guilty: \u201cI think I was at work when I heard that they were, sort of, returning the verdict, and sort of tuned in and I think I just sat there dumbfounded for a while, not really knowing how to process what I was hearing,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think it was real. I immediately switched to thinking: \u2018Well, what\u2019s next, you know? What happens next? This can\u2019t be it.
