{"id":118866,"date":"2025-08-04T18:50:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T18:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/118866\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T18:50:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T18:50:14","slug":"nj-ny-metro-area-hit-with-3-0-magnitude-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/118866\/","title":{"rendered":"NJ\/NY Metro Area hit with 3.0-Magnitude Earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The New York metropolitan area was struck by a 3.0-magnitude earthquake Saturday evening, its tremors felt throughout parts of the boroughs, Westchester country and Northern Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., the quake\u2019s epicenter, which is about eight miles from Manhattan, was hit around 10:18 p.m. EST with a depth of 10.0 kilometers, or 6.2 miles from the earth\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>While the earthquake was relatively mild and there have not been reports of serious damage or injuries, more than 10,000 people reported feeling the quake, according to the United States Geological Survey\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/map\/?currentFeatureId=us6000qxsb&amp;extent=-89.1006,-224.29688&amp;extent=89.1006,584.29688&amp;range=search&amp;format=dyfi&amp;listOnlyShown=true&amp;baseLayer=terrain&amp;timeZone=utc&amp;search=%7B%22name%22:%22Search%20Results%22,%22params%22:%7B%22starttime%22:%22-1%20week%22,%22minfelt%22:5,%22producttype%22:%22dyfi%22,%22orderby%22:%22time%22%7D%7D\" target=\"_blank\">Did You Feel It<\/a>\u201d page. People also quickly took to Reddit to make sure the shake they felt wasn\u2019t their neighbor or just in their heads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else feel that just now? It wasn\u2019t strong but still noticeable. Think it was an earthquake?\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Brooklyn\/comments\/1mg7umc\/was_that_an_earthquake\/\" target=\"_blank\">asked<\/a> akaenragedgoddess.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty immediately, folks began corroborating the message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFelt it too up here Inwood\/Washington Heights. Thought it was a big truck outside but didn\u2019t see anything,\u201d wrote bay-to-the-apple. \u201cFelt it in Astoria!\u201d said Asleep_Net5458. And, \u201cFelt it in the Bronx. The whole floor shook for about 2 seconds,\u201d reported wholevodka.<\/p>\n<p>Although residents in the northern parts of Jersey and NYC felt it the most, the shakes were still noticed by some farther south.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFelt it in Clinton hill,\u201d said Used_Apartment_5982. \u201cIn Brooklyn myself and I did feel it,\u201d wrote kzrmer_41.<\/p>\n<p>While Northeast earthquakes are infrequent and usually mild, they aren\u2019t unexpected. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/us6000qxsb\/executive\" target=\"_blank\">Since 1950<\/a>, 43 other earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or higher have struck within 250 kilometers (around 155 miles) of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. The largest of the 43 being the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Tewksbury and the metropolitan area just last April.<\/p>\n<p>The mere magnitude of Saturday\u2019s earthquake makes it difficult for scientists to predict the possibility of an aftershock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt just 3.0, the chances are there will not be another felt event,\u201d said seismologist <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/earthquake-new-jersey-magnitude-history-f8b8af56e358a0e057b308231eeb92d1\" target=\"_blank\">Lucy Jones<\/a>, according to AP News.
