\n\tGeorge Clooney<\/a> recently told Vanity Fair <\/a>that he could not adhere to Noah Baumbach\u2019s usual directing style of multiple takes when the duo teamed up for Netflix\u2019s \u201cJay Kelly<\/a>,\u201d which is world premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival later this month before bowing on Netflix later this year.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u00a0\u201cI literally said to him, \u2018Noah, look, I love the script. I love you as a director, but I\u2019m 63 years old, dude \u2014 I can\u2019t do 50 takes,\u2019\u201d Clooney said. \u201c\u2018I don\u2019t have it in me. I\u2019ve got the acting range from A to B.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tClooney headlines \u201cJay Kelly\u201d in the title role. Written by Baumbach and Emily Mortimer, the film stars the Oscar winner as a world famous movie star in his 60s who faces a personal reckoning when he travels to an Italian film festival to receive a tribute award. Laura Dern stars as Jay\u2019s publicist, while Adam Sandler<\/a> plays his manager.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen you\u2019re an actor in my position, at my age, finding roles like this aren\u2019t all that common,\u201d Clooney said of the movie, which is being positioned as one of Netflix\u2019s Oscar players this upcoming awards season. \u201cIf you can\u2019t make peace with aging, then you\u2019ve got to get out of the business and just disappear. I\u2019m now the guy that, when I go running after a bad guy, it\u2019s funny \u2014 it\u2019s not suspenseful. That\u2019s okay. I embrace all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of the reckonings Jay Kelly faces in the movie is longstanding criticism that he always just plays himself in his movies.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDo people say that I only play myself? I don\u2019t give a shit,\u201d Clooney told Vanity Fair<\/a>. \u201cThere aren\u2019t that many guys in my age group that are allowed to do both broad comedies like \u2018O Brother [Where Art Thou?]\u2019 and then do \u2018Michael Clayton\u2019 or \u2018Syriana\u2019. So if that means I\u2019m playing myself all the time, I don\u2019t give a shit. \u2026 Have you ever tried playing yourself? It\u2019s hard to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been the beneficiary of having my career not be massively successful in lots of different directions,\u201d Clooney continued. \u201cI didn\u2019t really get successful, in the kind of success that can be blinding, until I was 33 years old. I\u2019d been working for 12 years at that point. I had a real understanding of how fleeting all of it is and how little it has to do with you, quite honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tClooney also spoke highly of Sandler, who reunites with Baumbach in \u201cJay Kelly\u201d after their work together on \u201cThe Meyerowitz Stories.\u201d Sandler\u2019s manager character accompanies Jay on his trip Italy, resulting in many two-hander scenes between Sandler and Clooney.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis film, more than any film Adam has done, shows what a beautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor he is,\u201d Clooney said. \u201cI kept telling the cast, \u2018Don\u2019t call him\u00a0Sand Man. Don\u2019t talk to him like he\u2019s just some goofy comedian. He\u2019s actually a really beautiful, wonderful actor.\u2019 Because of what his paycheck is, which is doing big goofy comedies, when he does these other, beautiful,\u00a0\u2018Uncut Gems\u2019\u00a0kinds of movies, it reminds people of that. He\u2019s not just a good comedian.\u201d<\/p>\n
