{"id":11962,"date":"2025-06-24T23:16:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T23:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/11962\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T23:16:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T23:16:08","slug":"u2-guitarist-the-edge-becomes-irish-citizen-after-over-60-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/11962\/","title":{"rendered":"U2 guitarist The Edge becomes Irish citizen after over 60 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Edge is officially an Irish citizen.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\">After living in Ireland for 62 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/17\/show-must-go-on-u2-to-extend-residency-at-sphere-in-las-vegas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the U2 guitarist, 63,<\/a> became an Irish citizen Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess, you know, I\u2019m a little tardy with the paperwork,\u201d The Edge, whose real name is David Howell Evans, joked to reporters during a ceremony for new Irish citizens in Killarney, according to the Irish outlet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/the-edge-irish-citizenship-6741224-Jun2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Edge of U2 plays at the California Theatre in 2004. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\">\u201cI\u2019ve been living in Ireland now since I was 1-year-old,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut the time is right. And I couldn\u2019t be more proud of my country for all that it represents and all that it is doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\">Evans was born in Essex, England, but moved to Ireland as a child.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\">\u201cIt\u2019s showing real leadership right now in the world,\u201d the musician added, \u201cand it couldn\u2019t come at a better moment for me so I am just so happy to be at this point to be in even deeper connection with my homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Edge AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\">He shared that the paperwork to obtain his citizenship was \u201cquite straightforward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\">\u201cHonestly there were many moments in the past when I could have done it with just the form to be filled out but I\u2019m happy it\u2019s now,\u201d Evans admitted. \u201cIt feels more significant, it feels more meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\">\u201cBecause of what is going on in the world right now,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhat Ireland stands for, it\u2019s very powerful. We are talking really about showing leadership in the world, supporting our international bodies, the ICC, UN, speaking truth to power. Getty Images for NARAS<\/p>\n<p>The guitarist said becoming an Irish citizen with thousands of others was \u201ca monumental day for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\">U2 was founded in Dublin in 1976 by Evans,\u00a0Bono,\u00a0Adam Clayton\u00a0and\u00a0Larry Mullen Jr.\u00a0The group signed with\u00a0Island Records\u00a0and released its debut album,\u00a0\u201cBoy,\u201d in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>They have since put out 15 studio albums and garnered 22 Grammys and two Golden Globes. In 2004, U2 was inducted into the\u00a0UK Music Hall of Fame and the\u00a0Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The Edge WireImage<\/p>\n<p>The band\u2019s lead singer, Bono, 65, has worked on solo projects over the years, including a stage show called \u201cStories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief\u2026\u201d and his AppleTV+ film, \u201cBono: Stories of Surrender,\u201d that dropped last month.<\/p>\n<p>The movie follows Bono\u2019s 2022 memoir, \u201cSurrender: 40 Songs, One Story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May, the singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/music\/a64865208\/bono-stories-of-surrender-u2-interview-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spoke with Esquire<\/a>\u00a0about how the stage show made him \u201cmiss\u201d his father, Bob Hewson, who died in 2001 at 75.<\/p>\n<p>Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton of U2 perform in Sydney in 2019. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI began to really like him, as well as love him,\u201d Bono admitted about the performances. \u201cI even began to miss him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized it was his sense of humor,\u201d he explained about his late dad\u2019s jabs. \u201cMy whole life it came across as only cutting, but I realized how very funny it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started to realize that all of those arguments that we used to have at the kitchen table, he was always on the side of social justice,\u201d Bono detailed. \u201cHe owns that part of me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Edge is officially an Irish citizen.
