The Tennessee Volunteers are coming off a strong 2024 campaign that saw them win 10 games and earn their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.<\/p>\n

Hopes were high for 2025, but those expectations took a major hit when star quarterback Nico Iamaleava entered the transfer portal. His departure continues to loom large, as Tennessee is no longer recognized as a top-ten team in the initial 2025 Coaches Poll.<\/p>\n

Tennessee Tumbles in Coaches Poll After Losing Star QB Nico Iamaleava<\/p>\n

The Vols were dealt a major blow this offseason when Nico Iamaleava reportedly skipped spring practice due to a contract dispute. Head coach Josh Heupel\u00a0ultimately decided to move on<\/a>, prompting the former five-star quarterback\u00a0to enter the transfer portal.<\/p>\n

According to 247Sports composite rankings, Iamaleava was the No. 3 overall<\/a> player in the 2023 recruiting class. After Joe Milton left for the NFL, Iamaleava took over as Tennessee\u2019s starting quarterback in 2024, throwing for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just five interceptions.<\/p>\n

His unexpected departure has left the Vols with a major question mark at the most important position on the field.<\/p>\n

That uncertainty is already showing in coaches\u2019 minds across the country, as Tennessee landed at just No. 18<\/a> in the first coaches\u2019 poll of 2025.<\/p>\n

Tennessee\u2019s No. 18 ranking\u00a0is a steep drop from its No. 8 finish<\/a> at the end of the 2024 season. While the team experienced some roster turnover, it is returning 67% of its defensive production<\/a> from a year ago.<\/p>\n

With the production Tennessee is returning on defense, it would make sense for the team to be viewed similarly to where they finished last season. However, the offensive side of the ball tells a different story.<\/p>\n

Only 49% of their offensive production is back. While the team lost key pieces like running back Dylan Sampson and wide receiver Dont\u2019e Thornton to the NFL, the biggest factor in that drop is undoubtedly Iamaleava.<\/p>\n

The team had to pivot late in the spring to find a new quarterback. With limited options available, they turned to Joey Aguilar, who had transferred from App State to UCLA earlier in the offseason but re-entered the portal after Iamaleava landed with the Bruins, resulting in a QB swap of sorts.<\/p>\n

Aguilar was solid for App State in 2024, throwing for 3,003 yards and 23 touchdowns, but he struggled with turnovers, tossing 14 interceptions. Those kinds of mistakes can become even more costly in the SEC, where defenses are stronger than what he faced in the Sun Belt.<\/p>\n

With Iamaleva out the door, it\u2019s clear that college football coaches do not think the Vols will be nearly as good this year as they were last year.<\/p>\n
