{"id":120216,"date":"2025-08-05T06:45:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T06:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/120216\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T06:45:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T06:45:18","slug":"alabama-neighborhoods-garbage-day-brings-black-bears-searching-for-an-easy-meal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/120216\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama neighborhood\u2019s garbage day brings black bears searching for \u2018an easy meal\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OTY5KSW7CJD6DBU5QYTEDC6MNM\">Residents of a Saraland neighborhood opened their doors Monday to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/mobile\/2024\/03\/saraland-becomes-bear-aland-as-residents-adjust-to-their-furry-neighbors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/mobile\/2024\/03\/saraland-becomes-bear-aland-as-residents-adjust-to-their-furry-neighbors.html\">an increasingly common sight<\/a>, black bears roaming the neighborhood \u201cin search of an easy meal,\u201d according to X poster Donna Hughes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G62HQJLSZJES3BYLJEK7Z4W3RQ\">While black bear sightings can come as a shock in residential neighborhoods, Traci Wood, a conservation coordinator with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, says it\u2019s really no surprise at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MKTXXOC2CND5DKPLRWA3KIKJNU\">Wood, who works with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2023\/08\/how-researchers-are-helping-to-save-and-grow-the-black-bear-population-in-alabama.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auburn University researchers to study black bears in the state<\/a>, told AL.com previously that Mobile County is home to one of two \u201creproducing\u201d populations of black bears in Alabama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P673FSSZOZBKBHVP3N6ZOE4IQI\">That reproducing population is located near Saraland. And the approximately 125 bears in that population stay primarily within a 10-mile radius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FSQGAPTU6NB77JZNX74N2HYIK4\">\u201cPeople think they\u2019re seeing a lot of bears, but they\u2019re really seeing the same bears over and over again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5V3XJ4LBAZBOFAZY6GYGO7ZPCE\">Bears are very motivated by food, and Wood told reporter Margaret Kates that black bears, in particular, will search for the easiest food source possible, hence why Saraland residents often see the bears on trash day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GPGLWVSUQNHDTPAP2MNYWQZ5TE\">As Saraland continues to build housing to meet its steadily rising population, Wood predicts that human\/bear interactions will become more common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VF6MMHZPN5EX5F3VOMTGG2JROE\">If you spot a black bear that isn\u2019t leaving the area, Wood said you should stand very tall, put your hands in the air, clap and yell, making as much noise as possible, and walk backwards slowly until you get where you need to be. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"27OSO5R7RFFCFFYMYHCUMZSWKU\">Residents who encounter bears have been asked to report sightings to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdooralabama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the DCNR <\/a>website, which helps the department track and monitor the black bear population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HVFDN4HBMJGVHIDBUSWRPGBANM\">If a resident has a question about a bear encounter, they can reach out to the department and get more information.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
