Stone, the pilot of a Northwest Orient Airlines Stratocruiser, was credited when <a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/9d4Va8b679O0YPhGe4dHMLSewLTu0CGbqMWtZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gcGcl4SiKeZwLKYHyXlSzFhnhlJQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/9d4Va8b679O0YPhGe4dHMLSewLTu0CGbqMWtZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gcGcl4SiKeZwLKYHyXlSzFhnhlJQ&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1754421317052000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0hxdkTG7pvDV4HLhD3-JwB\">all 68 people survived<\/a> a crash landing at Chicago\u2019s Midway Airport. The crash occurred in the same area as a Braniff International Airways on\u00a0July 17, 1955.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Ch7aQgBk0C\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/01\/30\/vintage-chicago-tribune-plane-crashes-that-stunned-our-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Plane crashes that stunned our city<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cStone told officials of Northwest Orient Airlines that the propellers of the plane failed to reverse as he made a normal landing after a flight from Minneapolis,\u201d the Tribune reported.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Aides shield the Rev. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1966:<\/strong> During a march in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/07\/28\/50-years-ago-mlks-march-in-marquette-park-turned-violent-exposed-hate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marquette Park<\/a> to protest racial inequality in housing, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-dr-king-is-felled-by-ro\/178170484\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Luther King Jr.<\/a> was struck by a rock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been in many demonstrations all across the South, but I can say that I have never seen \u2014 even in Mississippi and Alabama \u2014 mobs as hostile and as hate-filled as I\u2019ve seen here in Chicago,\u201d King told reporters afterward.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"02I6Sqt2HJ\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/01\/12\/vintage-chicago-tribune-martin-luther-king-jr-leads-the-first-significant-freedom-movement-in-the-north\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: The Rev.
