Both backgrounds are tie-dye patterns.\" width=\"800\" height=\"420\" class=\"size-large wp-image-808359\"  \/><\/a>Jeffery and Hannah in the 1980s and later in the 2010s. <\/p>\n<p>Photographer Bill Lemke began capturing the Grateful Dead community on a large format camera in the 1980s when he documented 150 \u2018Deadheads\u2019 \u2014 as the fan base is known. But little did he know that it wasn\u2019t the end of the project.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Lemke received word from one of the Deadheads he photographed telling him how much she loved the photo and suggested taking a new photo \u2014 30 years after the first one. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI dusted off the old tie-dye backdrop and loaded it up with my canopy tent, and my wife and I went to take the portrait,\u201d Lemke tells PetaPixel. \u201cIt was such a great experience connecting with people I never expected to see again, that we decided to start searching for the original Deadheads to see if there were any more we could re-photograph.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/08\/05\/photographer-captures-grateful-dead-fans-then-and-now-on-same-large-format-camera\/58-michael\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-808358 nofollow noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/58-Michael-800x515.jpg\" alt=\"Two black-and-white portraits of the same long-haired, bearded man. In the right, he is serious, wearing a T-shirt and holding a conch shell.\" width=\"800\" height=\"515\" class=\"size-large wp-image-808358\"  \/><\/a>Michael <\/p>\n<p>Lemke shot the original photos with the aforementioned tie-dye backdrop \u2014 the signature Deadhead pattern \u2014 and a 4\u00d75 large format camera, which he has been using since 1977, primarily shooting landscapes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter seeing a Richard Avedon exhibit of portraits, I decided I wanted to document the Deadhead community members in formal portraits against a consistent tie-dye backdrop that was consistent with the music,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe first portraits were taken at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin during the summer of 1985.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/08\/05\/photographer-captures-grateful-dead-fans-then-and-now-on-same-large-format-camera\/6-dhaivyd\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-808356 nofollow noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/6-Dhaivyd-800x515.jpg\" alt=\"Two black-and-white portraits of shirtless men wearing necklaces, each standing against a radiating, light-colored background. The man on the left has light dreadlocks; the man on the right is older with glasses and thinning hair.\" width=\"800\" height=\"515\" class=\"size-large wp-image-808356\"  \/><\/a>Dhaivyd <\/p>\n<p>Lemke says he uses large format because it slows him down, allowing him to think more about composition and lighting. \u201cAnd, at around $7 per sheet of film, I don\u2019t just shoot in hopes of getting the image I want. I wait until I know it\u2019s going to be right,\u201d he adds, while also noting the supreme tonal quality and details compared to other formats. <\/p>\n<p>The large format camera is set up on a tripod, and he has eight different lenses and two different bellows to choose from. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI use a handheld light meter and take readings of the highlights and shadows to determine my exposure and development times,\u201d Lemke says. \u201cEverything about the camera is manual, which requires me to truly understand photography\u2026 not rely on taking lots of photos and hoping I can make one of them look good with Photoshop. I hand-process all of my own film and make silver gelatin prints in the darkroom.\u201d <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DMRQfkGvNNr\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lemke and his wife have tracked down 42 Deadheads and his photos are being compiled into a book titled \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/aginggratefullybook\/aging-gratefully\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Aging Gratefully.\u2019<\/a> Furthermore, the subjects spoke to writer David Gans to shed more light on their stories. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never published a book before, and the idea of self-publishing and investing over $30,000 to print 1,000 books that I have no guarantee of selling is a daunting thought for me,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, my wife helped me develop the Kickstarter primarily as a way to pre-sell copies of the book as a reward for backing at certain levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kickstarter hit its target and now with Dead &amp; Company \u2014 the remaining members of the original band \u2014 completing a triumphant 60-year reunion concert last weekend in San Fransisco, interest in the Grateful Dead is trending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] is a unique subculture that can remind us all of what it means to care for and about one another, to find family among those with common interests, and to live life according to your values (whatever they are),\u201d Lemke says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ability to work with David Gans (author, photographer, musician, and oral historian for the Grateful Dead) to make this project come alive allows me to feel I am leaving a legacy behind of my work as a photographer and of a time when caring for each other was something that really mattered in our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More of Lemke\u2019s work can be found on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/billlemkephoto\/?\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/billlemke.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Image credits:<\/strong> Photographs by Bill Lemke.<\/p>\n<p>      <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Jeffery and Hannah in the 1980s and later in the 2010s.
