Detroit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/new-york\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York City<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/chicago\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago<\/a> continued to record some of the worst air quality in the world on Tuesday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqair.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IQAir<\/a>, ranking fourth, 10th and 11th respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/canada\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a>, Montreal and Toronto had seen significant improvements by Tuesday and no longer ranked in the top 20 for unhealthy air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">About 81 million Americans remain under air quality alerts in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, northern Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Delaware and Maine, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/wwamap\/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&amp;wwa=Air%20Quality%20Alert\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service<\/a>. It is expected to improve for most areas by Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A high-pressure system parked over the midwest is trapping the smoke in place, causing air quality issues to linger for several days, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/air-egle.hub.arcgis.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">There are 747 active wildfires currently burning across Canada, with 507 \u2013 over two-thirds \u2013 of them out-of-control, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciffc.ca\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre<\/a> (CIFFC), a non-profit organization that is owned by government agencies, including 165 in Manitoba, 134 in British Columbia, and 111 in Northwest Territories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Most of the current fires that are causing the poor, smoggy air quality and reduced visibility are connected to warmer-than-average temperatures, drought conditions, decreased levels of snowpack and low soil moisture, according to Natural Resources Canada. All of those factors are driven by global heating, NRC says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In the western US, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/04\/california-evacuations-gifford-fire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">huge wildfire<\/a> in central California \u2013 the Gifford fire \u2013 has raged through 72,460 acres in the Los Padres national forest and is only 7% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fire.ca.gov\/incidents\/2025\/8\/1\/gifford-fire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contained<\/a>, threatening hundreds of homes and so far injuring three people.
