{"id":122095,"date":"2025-08-05T23:11:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T23:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122095\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T23:11:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T23:11:11","slug":"polis-becomes-first-democratic-governor-to-gain-usda-approval-for-snap-soda-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122095\/","title":{"rendered":"Polis becomes first Democratic governor to gain USDA approval for SNAP soda restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/author\/jahan-jones-ncpn371241\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/jahan-jones-msnbc_1.png\" alt=\"\" height=\"48\" width=\"48\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-03e9da\" class=\"body-graf\">Colorado\u2019s governor has signed on to a controversial component of President Donald Trump\u2019s dubiously named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/top-stories\/latest\/coca-cola-cane-sugar-high-fructose-corn-syrup-trump-rcna220345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d<\/a> agenda, becoming the country\u2019s first Democratic governor to secure federal approval to ban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/house-republicans-tax-bill-snap-benefits-rcna206772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">food assistance recipients<\/a> from using their benefits to buy soda and other sugary drinks. The ban is set to begin in 2026.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-679489\" class=\"body-graf\">The Republican Party \u2014 that is, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/120611\/michelle-obama-school-lunches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the party that once demonized then-first lady Michelle Obama<\/a> for discouraging the consumption of sugary drinks \u2014 has now led a movement targeting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients who buy them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9cd443\" class=\"body-graf\">Several GOP-led states have asked for \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/six-states-ban-junk-food-snap-benefits-2108900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">and received<\/a> \u2014 Agriculture Department waivers allowing them to restrict SNAP recipients from purchasing certain foods and beverages. And Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced Monday that he\u2019s joining them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-768cb9\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/governor\/news\/governor-polis-statement-federal-approval-colorados-snap-waiver-support-healthy-eating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In a news release<\/a>, the Democrat called the federal approval to restrict soda and sugary drink consumption \u201ca big step towards improving the health of Coloradans, and reducing obesity rates, diabetes, and tooth decay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cf71ba\" class=\"body-graf\">Polis\u2019 statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/maha-monday-snap-waivers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">essentially echoed<\/a> one made by conspiratorial Health Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/rfk-jr-hhs-vaccines-covid-bird-flu-moderna-rcna209745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a>, whose nomination to lead the Department of Health and Human Services was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-reidout\/reidout-blog\/jared-polis-robert-f-kennedy-rfk-hhs-rcna180378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">supported by Polis<\/a>. According to the news release, Colorado has pending requests for federal approval to expand SNAP recipients\u2019 ability to purchase food products from farmers markets and hot prepared foods from grocery stores.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-951f2f\" class=\"body-graf\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/06\/16\/nx-s1-5432809\/trump-snap-food-assistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent NPR report<\/a> shone light on how SNAP recipients are concerned about how they\u2019ll feed themselves or their families as they face the potential of fewer benefits and fewer purchasing options.
