{"id":122201,"date":"2025-08-06T00:07:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T00:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122201\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T00:07:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T00:07:10","slug":"carriage-horse-dies-on-nyc-street-in-horrifying-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122201\/","title":{"rendered":"Carriage horse dies on NYC street in horrifying scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lady was 15 years old, but couldn\u2019t survive six weeks on New York\u2019s streets. <\/p>\n<p>Lady, a Central Park carriage horse, collapsed on a Hell\u2019s Kitchen street and was \u201cdead when she hit the ground\u201d Tuesday \u2014 almost three years to the day since <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/17\/nyc-carriage-horse-ryder-dies-months-after-collapsing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a horse named Ryder fell<\/a>, and later had to be put down, sparking outrage across the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t help but see its muscles jiggled, and its tongue was rolling around on the ground,\u201d bystander Alex, 26, who was walking to get a smoothie when she saw a crowd gathering around the collapsed horse on 11th Avenue, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Lady, a Central Park carriage horse, was 15 years old. Obtained by the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked completely dead, I mean, its eyes were open and unblinking the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lady, 15, was new to the city and had only done two rides this afternoon, according to Christina Hansen, a spokesperson for Big Apple horse carriage drivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was dead when she hit the ground,\u201d said Hansen,\u00a0who thinks Lady may have had an aneurysm or a heart attack. <\/p>\n<p>Lady was seen down at the intersection of West 51st Street and 10th Avenue. X\/NYCLASS<\/p>\n<p>At first, the driver attempted to revive Lady, and deli workers brought out buckets of water, said Bernadette Edwards, 38, who worked at the deli across the street. <\/p>\n<p>By the time Alex walked down, other horse carriage drivers from the stables around the corner were trying to lug Lady\u2019s carcass into a trailer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just like watching (Lady\u2019s) mane dragging on the ground, and there were some fluids coming out of it onto the ramp into the trailer,\u201d\u00a0Alex said of the horrifying scene. <\/p>\n<p>Hansen said that Lady \u201cwas dead when she hit the ground.\u201d Obtained by the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like they were really desperate to remove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police arrived, and Lady was driven to the stables for carriage horses around the block. Her body will eventually be transported to Cornell University for a post-mortem exam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHorses are collapsing, suffering, and dying over and over again \u2014 and nothing changes,\u201d said Edita Birnkrant, the executive director of New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets.<\/p>\n<p>Lady\u2019s body will be transported to Cornell University for a post-mortem exam. The horse was recently purchased from Pennsylvania and had passed her veterinary exam on June 12 with flying colours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some of the strictest carriage regulations in the country,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cWe\u2019re under constant scrutiny because we work in public, and now there are smartphones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this summer, carriage driver <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/21\/us-news\/horse-carriage-driver-bursts-into-tears-after-jurors-reach-verdict-in-ryder-abuse-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ian McKeever was acquitted on charges of animal abuse<\/a> in the death of his horse, Ryder, whose public collapse in Midtown triggered three years of controversy and a city council bill, Ryder\u2019s Law, which, if passed, would ban carriages in Central Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy blocking Ryder\u2019s Law, (lawmakers) are protecting abusers and silencing the public demand for change,\u201d Birnkrant said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Lady was 15 years old, but couldn\u2019t survive six weeks on New York\u2019s streets.
