{"id":122397,"date":"2025-08-06T01:52:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T01:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122397\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T01:52:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T01:52:09","slug":"naked-gun-reboot-writers-on-controversial-jokes-o-j-r-word-sequel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122397\/","title":{"rendered":"Naked Gun Reboot Writers on Controversial Jokes: O.J., R-Word, Sequel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/the-naked-gun\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-naked-gun_1\" data-tag=\"the-naked-gun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Naked Gun<\/a> writers are proud to have stuffed their reboot with references to the classic movies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDan Gregor and Doug Mand, who co-wrote Paramount\u2019s comedy reboot with director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/akiva-schaffer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_akiva-schaffer_1\" data-tag=\"akiva-schaffer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Akiva Schaffer<\/a>, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter after the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/fantastic-four-first-steps-box-office-sharp-drop-1236336444\/\">film\u2019s solid opening weekend<\/a> at the box office. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/liam-neeson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_liam-neeson_1\" data-tag=\"liam-neeson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liam Neeson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/pamela-anderson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pamela-anderson_1\" data-tag=\"pamela-anderson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pamela Anderson<\/a> star in the franchise\u2019s fourth movie that revives the spoof series that featured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/leslie-nielsen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_leslie-nielsen_1\" data-tag=\"leslie-nielsen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leslie Nielsen<\/a> playing detective Frank Drebin and kicked off with director <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/naked-gun-david-zucker-reaction-reboot-liam-neeson-1236337047\/\">David Zucker\u2019s original 1988 film<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring the interview, Gregor and Mand discuss acknowledging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/o-j-simpson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_o-j-simpson_1\" data-tag=\"o-j-simpson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">O.J. Simpson<\/a> previously starring in the franchise as Officer Nordberg; potential ideas for another sequel; and how they landed on the movie\u2019s memorable cameos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>The film\u2019s villain definitely feels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/elon-musk\/\" id=\"auto-tag_elon-musk_1\" data-tag=\"elon-musk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a>-coded.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>DAN GREGOR<\/strong> Musk-y? <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Were there concerns about igniting the wrath of someone like Musk? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GREGOR<\/strong> Honestly, the funniest thing is, no. Our hope is that Cane is an amalgamation of all of the terrible billionaires in the world. We were really set on wanting this movie to have a certain amount of comedy timelessness, and so not getting pigeonholed in any one specific was really important for us. It\u2019s one of the miracles of the original movie, too, that it dated better than just about any comedy ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>There\u2019s that R-word conversation, which feels of the moment, but it has probably been going on for decades, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GREGOR<\/strong> I mean, the Black Eyed Peas wrote that song in 2003, and that song is not available to download anymore. It\u2019s just, \u201cLet\u2019s Get It Started.\u201d And so the Black Eyed Peas were having this conversation as they were releasing and un-releasing their own album [The E.N.D.] in 2009. These are pretty long-term conversations and comedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>What was the discussion like about how to address O.J.? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>DOUG MAND<\/strong> The O.J. thing was one of the first questions Kiva, Dan and myself got when people heard we were doing Naked Gun: \u201cWhat are you going to do about Nordberg and O.J.?\u201d It was one of the first joke areas we worked on in the movie, and we knew pretty quickly that we wanted it to be a fast reference [and] that we didn\u2019t want to live in the idea of O.J. too long. Pretty quickly, we came into the idea of a Hall of Fathers because it also was attached to another question we got, which was like, \u201cIs Liam playing Frank Drebin?\u201d We had a lot of alts of different O.J. jokes in the first couple of weeks, but then settled into this area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>There is a lot of talk about Liam and Pamela\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/liam-neeson-pamela-anderson-team-up-the-naked-gun-1236332549\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">real-life chemistry<\/a>. Did you sense that sparks were flying? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>MAND<\/strong> I am getting more texts about what\u2019s going on with them than anything else. All I can say is what I know \u2014 which is, on set from the beginning, the two of them had immediate chemistry. They liked each other. You only dream that your two co-stars are connecting on that level. I am pulling for the two of them in a very big way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Obviously, an appearance from Weird Al in this franchise feels de rigueur. What went into the cameos from familiar faces, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/priscilla-presley\/\" id=\"auto-tag_priscilla-presley_1\" data-tag=\"priscilla-presley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Priscilla Presley<\/a>? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GREGOR<\/strong> Weird Al, from the jump \u2014 there\u2019s a couple things to us that feel like the fan-service demands that we have to give, in some way or another. It\u2019s the same thing with having credit-sequence jokes and just some moment to hear that old wonderful theme song and see the police siren light. We did write at least a half dozen different places for him within the movie. There was one point where he was going to be the singer at Cane\u2019s gala.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>MAND<\/strong> Priscilla, we talked about just because she\u2019s an icon, and she\u2019s still with us. We didn\u2019t want to force it in. Luckily, she was game to do it, and that was really exciting for us. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Have you been discussing ideas for another movie?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GREGOR<\/strong> Oh, immediately we were already having fun doing that on set. This movie is a tight 85 minutes, but the truth is, every line had a dozen alts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>MAND<\/strong> Dan and I have notebooks already that we\u2019re already starting to just jot down ideas on. Akiva is the same way, to a degree. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>You previously worked on the movie Chip \u2018n Dale: Rescue Rangers. There was a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MangaArtist1108\/status\/1948998029970645075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">viral social media post<\/a> last week criticizing that the film seemed to villainize the real-life Peter Pan actor. Do comments like that surprise you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GREGOR<\/strong> When you\u2019re touching someone\u2019s childhood, you do not know what you are going to stir up. There are Gadget fans out there that I would not want to meet in an alley in the street at night. It\u2019s functionally the ethos that we go into everything we do. There\u2019s so much IP-driven stuff now, [and] we really feel like you have to have a certain amount of kicking up dust to make it worth it. You can\u2019t be so reverential to the thing that came before. Rescue Rangers came completely out of that ethos, which was like, \u201cHow do we completely destroy the concept of nostalgia?\u201d But even going into [Naked Gun] was the same thing, which was like, \u201cWe really need to make sure that it has a real reason to exist on its own.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Any Naked Gun lines or moments that make you the proudest?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GREGOR<\/strong> The joke that just has never gotten old, especially in the performance of it, is the ending where the Danny Huston-Liam Neeson fight happens. The whole movie is building up to them fighting each other, and the very first punch, he\u2019s like, \u201cYou hurt my tummy.\u201d That whole run never, never, never doesn\u2019t make me laugh every single time I watch. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Naked Gun writers are proud to have stuffed their reboot with references to the classic movies.
