{"id":122495,"date":"2025-08-06T02:44:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T02:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122495\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T02:44:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T02:44:17","slug":"military-chief-said-to-clash-with-netanyahu-over-plans-to-conquer-gaza-sons-tweet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/122495\/","title":{"rendered":"Military chief said to clash with Netanyahu over plans to conquer Gaza, son&#8217;s tweet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir reportedly clashed over the government\u2019s incipient plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, with Zamir arguing that the decision constitutes a \u201ctrap\u201d for the IDF.<\/p>\n<p>The two men also tussled, according to Hebrew media reports, over a post on X by the prime minister\u2019s son, Yair Netanyahu, who does not hold a government position. The younger Netanyahu lashed out at Zamir and suggested that he was behind a \u201crebellion and attempted military coup that is fit for a banana republic in Central America in the 70s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamir objected to that accusation, saying in the meeting, according to the Kan public broadcaster, \u201cHow does that look? Why are you attacking me? Why are you speaking against me in the middle of a war?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu reportedly responded, \u201cDon\u2019t threaten to quit in the media. I can\u2019t accept that every time you threaten that if we don\u2019t accept your plans, you\u2019ll leave. My son is 33, he\u2019s a grown man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamir has repeatedly clashed with the cabinet, and sources in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office have suggested that if he objects to the plan to occupy Gaza, he can resign.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The IDF chief also reportedly said during Tuesday\u2019s deliberations that full occupation would endanger the 50 hostages held by terror groups in Gaza, at least 20 of whom are thought to be alive, and would further exhaust the army.<\/p>\n<p>The argument was the latest in a series of disagreements between the cabinet and IDF brass. It reportedly took place during a three-hour meeting of a limited group of ministers, ahead of a cabinet vote to approve the occupation plan. Netanyahu has reportedly decided to move forward with occupation, a longstanding demand of his far-right coalition partners, as negotiations with Hamas hit an impasse in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/08\/92241e34-dbfb-41a2-b6e8-be39a6ac94f5-e1754382059637.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3613629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/92241e34-dbfb-41a2-b6e8-be39a6ac94f5-e1754382059637-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>IDF troops operate in the Gaza Strip, in an image published on August 5, 2025. (Israel Defense Forces)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to create a trap in Gaza,\u201d Zamir told Netanyahu, according to the Kan public broadcaster. Channel 12 quoted Zamir as saying that occupation \u201cwill significantly endanger the lives of the hostages and cause the erosion of the army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamir, according to both outlets, is recommending that, rather than fully conquer the strip, the IDF encircle Gaza City and possibly other population centers, then use those positions to launch attacks. The Walla news site reported that the IDF chief is suggesting a gradual approach.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu reportedly responded by telling Zamir to prepare plans for the occupation of the Strip to present to the cabinet. Kan reported that when Zamir said he had already presented them, the prime minister responded, \u201cMake the improvements and present it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a likely reference to the pushback from Zamir, Netanyahu\u2019s office said in a statement after the meeting, \u201cThe IDF is prepared to implement any decision made by the security cabinet,\u201d which was expected to convene Thursday to approve the occupation plans.<\/p>\n<p>The IDF currently holds control over approximately 75 percent of the Gaza Strip, but under the new plan, the military would be expected to occupy the remaining territory as well \u2014 bringing the entire enclave under Israeli control.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear what such a move would mean for the Strip\u2019s millions of civilians and for humanitarian groups operating in the enclave.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/08\/F250804ALH01.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3613859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/F250804ALH01-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Displaced Palestinians carry food parcels and supplies from a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid distribution point along the Netzarim Corridor in the central Gaza Strip, August 4, 2025. (Ali Hassan\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>The war in Gaza began October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists invaded Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty hostages are still believed to be alive in captivity, while twenty-eight have been confirmed dead, and Israel has expressed grave concern about two more. The figures include the body of a soldier killed in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas released 30 hostages \u2014 20 Israeli civilians, five soldiers, and five Thai nationals \u2014 and the bodies of eight slain Israeli captives during a ceasefire between January and March, and one additional hostage, a dual American-Israeli citizen, in May as a \u201cgesture\u201d to the United States.
