Who could forget Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech? The man was a legend with 280 career wins, 23 straight bowl games, and a Sugar Bowl national title appearance in 1999. A statue outside Lane Stadium. A street named Beamer Way. As Andy Staples put it in the doc, \u201cVirginia Tech brings a beat-up lunchbox onto the field as an emblem of what that program\u2019s about. They are the tough, hard-working guys. They won a lot of games at Virginia Tech. Was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.\u201d That\u2019s the level of ghost haunting Shane\u2019s every step. So yeah, the pressure on the Gamecocks HC isn\u2019t just about wins and losses. It\u2019s about legacy. That\u2019s exactly why he packed his bags.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love Virginia Tech. I was here before as an assistant coach. But up there, I\u2019m always \u2018Frank\u2019s son\u2019,\u201d Shane Beamer admitted. \u201cI came to South Carolina because I wanted to make my own name, be Shane Beamer and not just \u2018Frank\u2019s son\u2019. And boy, has he. In just three seasons, he has flipped the script in Columbia. After inheriting a 2-win mess from Will Muschamp<\/b>, he went 7-6 in Year One, 8-5 in Year Two, and then uncorked a 9-4 record in 2024. That included a six-game win streak to end the regular season, with wins over three ranked teams, No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 23 Missouri, and No. 12 Clemson. His blueprint was simple. Don\u2019t be Frank, just be Shane and prove yourself. And that brings us to his deep desire to emulate his dad\u2019s legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shane Beamer\u2019s story isn\u2019t just one of escaping his dad\u2019s shadow. It\u2019s about roots, new ones. \u201cI love this state. I want to retire here and make an impact here on and off the field for a long time. Like my dad did at Virginia Tech.\u201d he said in the episode. The doc shows a quiet corner of his house filled with memorabilia. Glass-encased footballs, a Spurrier trophy, and a newspaper headlined \u201cBeamer Comes Home.\u201d \u201cAll of this stuff is just things I\u2019ve collected and saved over the years,\u201d he said as he proudly looked at his treasure with hands on his sides.<\/p>\n
One memento stood out, a sideline pass from 1987. \u201cWhen my dad became a head coach at Virginia Tech,\u201d Shane Beamer said, pulling it out. \u201cHis very first away game as a head football coach was at South Carolina, Williams Brice Stadium, October 10, 1987.\u201d The elder Beamer\u2019s accolades could stretch across a football field. Five-time conference Coach of the Year, architect of the legendary \u201cBeamerball,\u201d and developer of over a dozen First Team All-Americans. But his son is modernizing it in his way<\/a> by relentless grinding.<\/p>\n ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cWe did a lot of good last season,\u201d Shane Beamer said at SEC Media Days in July. \u201cBut there is a lot that we need to be better at offensively, defensively, and in special teams.\u201d So, nine wins still isn\u2019t enough in Columbia. And fittingly, the stage for season kickoff couldn\u2019t be more poetic. August 31st. Atlanta. Gamecocks vs. Hokies. Beamer vs. Beamer\u2019s blueprint. Frank\u2019s legacy will be on the opposing sideline. And Shane\u2019s future is directly ahead after a close playoff scenario in 2024<\/a>. One game. Two schools.
