{"id":123709,"date":"2025-08-06T13:41:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T13:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/123709\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T13:41:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T13:41:24","slug":"disney-sees-quarterly-theme-parks-dtc-profits-amid-espn-flurry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/123709\/","title":{"rendered":"Disney Sees Quarterly Theme Parks &#038; DTC Profits Amid ESPN Flurry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/disney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_disney\" data-tag=\"disney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disney<\/a>\u2019s theme parks, which had a few wobbly quarters, blew past Wall Street estimates as streaming profits advanced in the June quarter, vying with red ink at the film studio and declines at linear networks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn an early look at the numbers, Evercore ISI analyst Kutgun Maral called it a \u201chealthy quarter with upside where it matters most, theme parks &amp; DTC profitability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShares rose overnight, dipped premarket and are trading sideways as CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/bob-iger\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bob-iger\" data-tag=\"bob-iger\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Iger<\/a> and CFO Hugh Johnson take questions from analysts on a call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTotal revenue rose 2% for Disney\u2019s fiscal third quarter to $23.7 billion, hair lighter than forecasts. Adjusted <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/earnings\/\" id=\"auto-tag_earnings\" data-tag=\"earnings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earnings<\/a> per share was a big beat at $1.61, up from $1.39.  \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOperating income across the media giant\u2019s three reporting segments \u2013 Entertainment, Experiences and Sports \u2014 grew 8% to $4.6 billion. The latter division led by <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/espn\/\" id=\"auto-tag_espn\" data-tag=\"espn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN<\/a> is taking center court with major announcements over the past 12 hours: <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/espn-sets-launch-date-price-streaming-wwe-nfl-1236479810\/#recipient_hashed=5b72398f336ce2e7cacf88439d652e9a24dad01efd1913fbffa8d3709b146ce3&amp;recipient_salt=f3b31a41d2139c8efbc549c80e9c1df196a1e42e502d9bcc88d7ca495f999ae7&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=exacttarget&amp;utm_campaign=Deadline_BreakingNews&amp;utm_content=624999_08-06-2025&amp;utm_term=7921072?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=exacttarget&amp;utm_campaign=1754478324-Breaking+News+Alert&amp;utm_content=624999_8-6-2025&amp;utm_id=624999\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the timing and price of ESPN\u2019s new streaming service<\/a>; a rights deal with WWE; and <a href=\"http:\/\/Adjusted%20EPS%20rose%2016%25%20to%201.61%20from%201.39%20%20%201.46%20was%20cons%20beat%20of%2015%20cents\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN acquiring the NFL Network<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn <strong>Sports<\/strong>, ESPN\u2019s domestic advertising revenue rose 3%. Profit eased 7% on higher programming and production costs including rate increases for the NBA and college sports rights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTotal Sports revenue fell 5% to $4.3 billion and profit surged 29% to $1 billion absent losses from Star India that weighed on the 2024 quarter. Disney <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/11\/disney-reliance-complete-deal-form-indian-entertainment-giant-1236176463\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restructured its India operations<\/a> in November of 2024, which will have a ripple effect its financials until it passes that point this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Entertainment profit<\/strong> of $1 billion dropped 15% and revenue inched up 1% to $10.7 billion as softer theatrical and ongoing declines in linear television were partly offset by upbeat streaming results. The content division where the film studio lives swung to a loss of $21 million from a profit of $254 million on higher film cost impairments and lower box office with <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/elio\/\" id=\"auto-tag_elio\" data-tag=\"elio\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elio<\/a>, Thunderbolts and Lilo &amp; Stitch in the June quarter vs <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/inside-out-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_inside-out-2\" data-tag=\"inside-out-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Inside Out 2<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn commentary alongside the numbers, CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston held up Lilo &amp; Stitch as a proof of ongoing momentum at the film studio. The live action remake reboot recently crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, making it Hollywood\u2019s first film to reach that milestone this year, joining global hits Moana 2, Deadpool &amp; Wolverine and Inside Out 2 to become Disney\u2019s fourth billion-dollar-film in just over a year and fueling viewership of the original 2002 animated film and related content on <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/disney-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_disney-2\" data-tag=\"disney-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disney+<\/a> with more than 640 million hours streamed globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tA a sequel to the live-action film is n development. The film is also is on track to become the company\u2019s second-largest licensed merchandise franchise this year behind only Mickey Mouse, with more than 70% revenue growth compared to last year. Stitch has been deployed across our parks and experiences worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMarvel\u2019s The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened to great reviews two weeks ago and upcoming 2025 releases include highly anticipated Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash. Lucasfilm\u2019s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Pixar\u2019s Toy Story 5, a live-action Moana and Marvel\u2019s Avengers: Doomsday arrive in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Direct-to-Consumer<\/strong> revenue rose 6% to $6.2 billion as streaming profit of $346 million bested a $19 million loss a year ago and was up sequentially from Q1 as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDisney+ hit 128 million subscribers, adding 1.8 million from FYQ2. Disney+ and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hulu\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hulu\" data-tag=\"hulu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hulu<\/a> subs combined rose to 183 million. Hulu grew to 55.5 million total subscribers including 4.3 million with Live TV, which declined slightly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDisney\u2019s fiscal year ends in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe quarter was big on Hulu news. <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/hulu-disney-sole-ownership-comcast-bob-iger-streaming-1236428619\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disney closed out its acquisition of the remaining stake in the streamer<\/a> it didn\u2019t already own \u00a0from Comcast\/NBCUniversal on June 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDisney said Q2 DTC was marked by subscription revenue growth on more subscribers and rate increases. Programming and production costs fell from the year earlier that included International Cricket Council (ICC) carried on Disney+ Hotstar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe company also noted an increase in hours of content available on the services, lower marketing costs, and higher subscriber-based license fees attributable to more subscribers to bundles with third party offerings. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Linear Networks<\/strong> revenue fell 15% to $2.27 billion and operating income declined 28% to $697 million driven by the Star India transaction that knocked international revenue down by 58%. Domestic revenue also fell 4% to $2.05 billion, and profit dropped 14% as advertising sales declined amid lower average viewership and rates. Affiliate revenue fell on fewer subscribers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThis has the been the same story quarter after quarter at Disney and other legacy media companies for years now. Warner Bros. Discovery and Comcast are carving out their linear assets. <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/disney-and-hearst-exploring-sale-of-ae-global-media-cable-tv-1236451721\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disney and partner Hearst are exploring a sale of jointly owned A+E Media,<\/a> something CEO Iger may be asked about on the call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>Domestic Parks &amp; Experiences<\/strong> revenue jumped 10% to $6.4 billion and operating income grew 22% to $1.7 billion with higher spending and more hotel stays at the parks and resorts and, to a lesser extent, a boost from Disney Cruise Line from the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/disney-treasure\/\" id=\"auto-tag_disney-treasure\" data-tag=\"disney-treasure\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disney Treasure<\/a> in the March quarter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tExperiences\u2019 total revenue including international parks and consumer products, rose 8%, ahead of forecasts, to $9.1 billion with operating income of $2.5 billion, up 13%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tUniversal <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/epic-universe\/\" id=\"auto-tag_epic-universe\" data-tag=\"epic-universe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Epic Universe<\/a> opened May 22, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/comcast-earnings-epic-universe-how-to-train-your-dragon-hulu-1236475056\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boosting parent Comcast\u2019s quarterly numbers <\/a>but showing no apparent negative impact on Orlando neighbor <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/walt-disney-world\/\" id=\"auto-tag_walt-disney-world\" data-tag=\"walt-disney-world\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walt Disney World<\/a>. Also in May, Disney made a big splash announcing <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/05\/disney-plans-theme-park-resort-yas-island-abu-dhabi-1236388176\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new, state-of-the- theme park<\/a> anf waterfront resort in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe are pleased with our creative success and financial performance in Q3 as we continue to execute across our strategic priorities,\u201d said Iger after the quarterly numbers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThe company is taking major steps forward in streaming with the upcoming launch of ESPN\u2019s direct-to-consumer service, our just-announced plans with the NFL, and our forthcoming integration of Hulu into Disney+, creating a truly differentiated streaming proposition that harnesses the highest caliber brands and franchises, general entertainment, family programming, news, and industry-leading sports content.
