The partnership is designed to bring new federal immigration enforcement resources to Keller police, including specialized training in screening arrestees for immigration infractions.<\/p>\n
The move to join the program was\u00a0first introduced last month<\/a>\u00a0by Keller Mayor Armin Mizani.<\/p>\n Mizani called opting into the partnership \u201ca common sense thing\u201d and expects improvements to public safety in Keller and the surrounding communities.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve had elected officials already reach out and say, \u2018We\u2019re looking at what you\u2019re doing and we want to implement the same,\u2019 \u201d Mizani said. \u201cAnd my hope, my anticipation, is that that will happen.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the jeers that followed some of his remarks, Mizani said he expects most Keller voters will approve of the decision.<\/p>\n But protesters pointed to Mizani\u2019s campaign for statewide office as a motivation to push for approval of this program. The mayor is\u00a0seeking the Texas House District 98 seat<\/a>\u00a0recently vacated by Giovanni Capriglione, although he had his sights set on a state senate seat earlier this year.<\/p>\n Keller resident Zane Cooper questioned during public comment the reasoning for this decision by the city council.<\/p>\n \u201cIf this doesn\u2019t really change the status quo of what we\u2019re already doing, why even engage in it?
