issued a statement<\/a> that he was \u201csaddened\u201d by the \u201ctragedy\u201d at Fort Stewart, and assured that his administration has been in close contact with law enforcement personnel on the ground.<\/p>\n\u201cWe are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that all Georgians do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fort Stewart is the largest US Army installation east of the Mississippi River, covering some 280,000 acres (437 square miles, or 93% the size of New York City) in southeast Georgia, and serving as home to the 3rd Infantry Division as well as a training area for a number of other military units.<\/p>\n

The lockdown began at about 11 a.m. in the area near the Wright and Evans Army Airfield and the Fort Stewart Schools. WJCL<\/p>\n
More than 10,000 soldiers, Army civilian employees, and their families live at the base,\u00a0which is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah.<\/p>\n
The base was the site of another shooting in 2022<\/a> in which infantryman Shay Wilson, 28, of Queens, shot and killed 30-year-old Sgt. Nathan Hillman, an Afghan War vet, inside one of the fort building complexes.
