{"id":124487,"date":"2025-08-06T20:26:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T20:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/124487\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T20:26:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T20:26:09","slug":"trumps-doj-targets-sanctuary-city-nyc-by-going-after-migrants-with-federal-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/124487\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump&#8217;s DOJ targets sanctuary city NYC by going after migrants with federal charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost 200 illegal migrants in New York have been charged with federal crimes for entering the US illegally \u2014 after the Trump administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/19\/us-news\/how-trumps-doj-is-forcing-sanctuary-city-authorities-to-help-with-immigration-crackdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found a workaround to bypass sanctuary city laws<\/a>\u00a0and force local authorities to help with the president\u2019s mass deportation effort.<\/p>\n<p>The workaround escalates the cases from\u00a0a civil immigration issue\u00a0to a federal criminal one, allowing ICE agents to enter jails of sanctuary jurisdictions, including the Empire State, to pick up illegal migrants.<\/p>\n<p>More than <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/04\/us-news\/illegal-migrant-who-broke-free-with-help-of-anti-ice-activists-caught-while-wearing-1700-louis-vuitton-t-shirt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35,000 border crossers roaming the country<\/a> have been charged after entering the US illegally one or more times since President Trump returned to the White House, according to data obtained by The Post.<\/p>\n<p>ICE agents arrest an illegal migrant on the streets of New York City. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 200 migrants in New York were charged with federal crimes, the federal data shows.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious Manhattan US Attorney\u2019s office in the Southern District of New York has hit 26 illegal migrants with the charges, according to the data.<\/p>\n<p>Living in the US without documentation is not a crime under federal law, however, being caught crossing the border illegally is both a criminal and civil offense.<\/p>\n<p>Still, illegal entry into the US is typically treated as a civil violation, resulting in deportation, rather than a federal crime \u2014 unless the person has already been deported or other criminal activity is involved. <\/p>\n<p>Under the Trump administration and its immigration crackdown, ICE agents and DOJ attorneys across the country have been working \u201caround the clock\u201d to hit as many migrants with the federal criminal charges as they can, Homeland Security sources told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has also <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/05\/us-news\/arsonist-attacks-ice-office-in-washington-state-hurls-rock-through-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted more than 4,200 migrants<\/a> roaming California as part of the effort, according to the data.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has been \u201cpushing\u201d US attorneys \u201cto get creative\u201d with targeting illegal migrants that pose \u201csignificant risks to public safety\u201d in sanctuary cities and states, a DOJ source said.<\/p>\n<p>Such\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/07\/us-news\/kilmar-abrego-garcia-was-allegedly-hired-by-a-convicted-human-smuggler-to-transport-illegal-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal criminal warrants are almost universally recognized<\/a>, allowing ICE agents to enter jails without violating local sanctuary laws.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has used the criminal warrants to force sanctuary cities to open their jails to ICE agents. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The warrants serve as a carveout for New York City\u2019s sanctuary laws since they\u2019re approved by a federal magistrate judge.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration is \u201ccalling the bluff of sanctuary jurisdictions\u201d in carrying out the effort, Andrew Arthur, a legal expert with the Center for Immigration Studies, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will almost always honor those warrants. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re playing with fire if they ignore a federal judicial warrant,\u201d\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/24\/us-news\/doj-sues-nyc-mayor-adams-over-sanctuary-policies-after-off-duty-cpb-officer-shot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued New York City and Mayor Eric Adams<\/a> last month\u00a0over Gotham\u2019s sanctuary\u00a0laws, days after an illegal immigrant shot an off-duty\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/23\/us-news\/illegal-migrant-accused-of-shooting-off-duty-cbp-officer-in-nyc-was-only-vetted-over-zoom-before-being-set-free-under-biden-admin-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Customs and Border Protection officer in the face<\/a>\u00a0during a\u00a0botched robbery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States has well-established, preeminent, and preemptive authority to regulate immigration,\u201d federal attorneys\u00a0wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York City has long been at the vanguard of interfering with enforcing this country\u2019s immigration laws.
