\n\tJames Cameron<\/a> may be exploring how artificial intelligence <\/a>can help assist directing blockbuster movies, but he\u2019s still aware that his \u201cTerminator\u201d franchise could very much become a reality if AI gets into the wrong hands. In an interview with Rolling Stone<\/a> to promote the book release of \u201cGhosts of Hiroshima,\u201d which he plans on adapting into a movie, the Oscar-winning \u201cTitantic\u201d and \u201cAvatar\u201d director said an arms race relying on AI is a dangerous thing.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI do think there\u2019s still a danger of a\u00a0\u2018Terminator\u2019-style apocalypse where you put AI together with weapons systems, even up to the level of nuclear weapon systems, nuclear defense counterstrike, all that stuff,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cBecause the theater of operations is so rapid, the decision windows are so fast, it would take a super-intelligence to be able to process it, and maybe we\u2019ll be smart and keep a human in the loop. But humans are fallible, and there have been a lot of mistakes made that have put us right on the brink of international incidents that could have led to nuclear war. So I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI feel like we\u2019re at this cusp in human development where you\u2019ve got the three existential threats: climate and our overall degradation of the natural world, nuclear weapons, and super-intelligence,\u201d he added. \u201cThey\u2019re all sort of manifesting and peaking at the same time. Maybe the super-intelligence is the answer. I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m not predicting that, but it might be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCameron\u2019s \u201cThe Terminator<\/a>\u201d franchise kicked off in 1984 with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role. The film is set in a world where an artificially-intelligent defense network known as Skynet has become self-aware and has conquered humanity.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs far as Hollywood and AI is concerned, Cameron said in a viral interview with CTV News<\/a> in 2023 that he doubted AI could ever come up with a \u201cgood story\u201d that could replace screenwriters.<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to Cameron: \u201cI just don\u2019t personally believe that a disembodied mind that\u2019s just regurgitating what other embodied minds have said \u2014 about the life that they\u2019ve had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality \u2014 and just put it all together into a word salad and then regurgitate it\u2026I don\u2019t believe that\u2019s ever going to have something that\u2019s going to move an audience. You have to be human to write that. I don\u2019t know anyone that\u2019s even thinking about having AI write a screenplay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Cameron is thinking about how AI can help facilitate blockbuster filmmaking amid skyrocketing production costs. The director\u00a0announced\u00a0<\/a>in September 2024 that he was joining the board of directors for Stability AI,\u00a0the company behind the text-to-image model Stable Diffusion. He said on the\u00a0\u201cBoz to the Future\u201d podcast<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year that the future of blockbuster filmmaking hinges on being able to \u201ccut the cost of [VFX] in half.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf we want to continue to see the kinds of movies that I\u2019ve always loved and that I like to make and that I will go to see \u2014 \u2018Dune,\u2019 \u2018Dune: Part Two,\u2019 or one of my films or big effects-heavy, CG-heavy films \u2014 we\u2019ve got to figure out how to cut the cost in half,\u201d Cameron said about how AI might be helpful. \u201cNow that\u2019s not about laying off half the staff and at the effects company. That\u2019s about doubling their speed to completion on a given shot, so your cadence is faster and your throughput cycle is faster, and artists get to move on and do other cool things and then other cool things, right? That\u2019s my sort of vision for that.\u201d<\/p>\n
