Katie Hobbs visited the cafeteria at Madison Park Middle School in Phoenix Wednesday afternoon to highlight $6 million of state funding for school lunches.<\/p>\n<p>The funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/azgovernor.gov\/office-arizona-governor\/news\/2025\/06\/governor-katie-hobbs-celebrates-passage-arizona-promise-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state budget<\/a> will benefit two programs, as $3.8 million will go toward making 10 million reduced-price lunch meals free for students.<\/p>\n<p>Another $2.1 million will go to <a href=\"https:\/\/des.az.gov\/SUNBucks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUN Bucks<\/a>, a system that provides free meals during the summer when school lunches aren\u2019t available.<\/p>\n<p>While meeting with students and cafeteria staff, Hobbs stressed how important the funding is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about how important having a good lunch at school is and how hard it is to learn if you don\u2019t have a nutritious meal \u2026 one student who had brought lunch from home talked about helping his friend pay for lunch last year at school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madisonaz.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madison School District<\/a> Superintendent Kimberly Guerin said this will help many students who are already receiving reduced-price meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s different thresholds in regards to supporting students and families with lunch feeding\u2026 And so, this legislation that passed actually covered all reduced-price meals, so that tier was swept into the free tier,\u201d Guerin said. \u201cSo, all of those students get to eat for free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashley St. Thomas, the director of public policy for the <a href=\"https:\/\/azfoodbanks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arizona Food Bank Network,<\/a> expressed her appreciation for the governor\u2019s efforts when it comes to feeding children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that one in five kids in the state doesn\u2019t know where their next meal is coming from and so that\u2019s why school meals and investing in them is a priority for us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for this journalism is made possible by the Arizona Local News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/@shiratanzernews\" data-show-count=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow @@shiratanzernews<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We want to hear from you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Have a story idea or tip?
