{"id":125172,"date":"2025-08-07T02:25:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T02:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/125172\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T02:25:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T02:25:12","slug":"tulsi-gabbard-declassified-documents-over-cia-objections-sources-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/125172\/","title":{"rendered":"Tulsi Gabbard declassified documents over CIA objections, sources say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-5759d0\" class=\"body-graf\">National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/national-security\/gabbards-unprecedented-claim-president-led-treasonous-conspiracy-rcna217151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">decided to declassify a document<\/a> on Russia\u2019s interference in the 2016 election last month over the objections of CIA officials who argued that more details should remain secret to protect sensitive spying sources and methods, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-61cbf5\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2025\/08\/06\/gabbard-russia-report-cia-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a> first reported the disagreement. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d553cc\" class=\"body-graf\">Some former intelligence officers said they were alarmed at the detail revealed in the declassified document. The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, of Virginia, <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.warner.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2025\/7\/statement-of-vice-chairman-warner-on-dni-gabbard-s-release-of-partisan-hpsci-russia-report*:*:text=Jul*2023*202025,previously*2__;I34lJSU!!PIZeeW5wscynRQ!p2Rwg1Eiud25V12nvVpZ-0vlhiYQxmq9crDfDl_o5UjP1iVhYx8fEljeUNdDdLSWIFnflffswurfLJj3lhiusjOv1yR9g4m1ZGnnkZbP$\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has warned<\/a> that the move could put intelligence-gathering efforts at risk.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f30dd9\" class=\"body-graf\">The intelligence director\u2019s office and the CIA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5b765a\" class=\"body-graf\">Gabbard last month declassified a<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.dni.gov\/files\/ODNI\/documents\/DIG\/DIG-Declassified-HPSCI-Report-Manufactured-Russia-Hoax-July2025.pdf__;!!PIZeeW5wscynRQ!p2Rwg1Eiud25V12nvVpZ-0vlhiYQxmq9crDfDl_o5UjP1iVhYx8fEljeUNdDdLSWIFnflffswurfLJj3lhiusjOv1yR9g4m1ZOyL7ccm$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> five-year-old report<\/a> about the 2016 election by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, saying President Donald Trump backed the decision. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-10e5bd\" class=\"body-graf\">The declassified version of the report included relatively few redactions, and it included references to eavesdropping and \u201can established clandestine\u201d human source with insights into Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s view of the U.S. presidential contest. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2f2dcd\" class=\"body-graf\">Michael Van Landingham, a former CIA analyst who helped write the 2017 intelligence community assessment, said he was taken aback at the detail exposed in the declassified document. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9a92e6\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI was shocked to see the declassification detailing the dates the US IC [intelligence community] gathered material, naming specific Russian actors, and quoting at length from both raw and serialized intelligence reports of Russian leadership discussions,\u201d he told NBC News. \u201cThis sort of information would allow for Russian authorities to easily find potential sources of the leaks, which would complicate the job of the US IC keeping America safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2133a0\" class=\"body-graf\">Van Landingham said that when he was working as an analyst examining the same material about Russia\u2019s election meddling in 2016, he was subject to a polygraph test and was allowed to read the information in hard copy only after he signed his name to request it. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c8ea87\" class=\"body-graf\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/stories\/story\/cia-director-john-ratcliffe-declassifies-internal-tradecraft-review\/__;!!PIZeeW5wscynRQ!p2Rwg1Eiud25V12nvVpZ-0vlhiYQxmq9crDfDl_o5UjP1iVhYx8fEljeUNdDdLSWIFnflffswurfLJj3lhiusjOv1yR9g4m1ZGuqKeO9$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent internal review <\/a>of a 2017 U.S. intelligence assessment of Russia\u2019s interference in the 2016 election, the CIA used more cautious language in referring to the information that supported the assessment\u2019s conclusions, without specifying the precise nature of intelligence sources.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-691b09\" class=\"body-graf\">The CIA review, which Director John Ratcliffe declassified July 2, referred to \u201chighly classified\u201d intelligence reporting about Putin\u2019s preferred candidate in the U.S. presidential race, without specifying the source of the information. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b135d0\" class=\"body-graf\">Larry Pfeiffer, a former senior intelligence official who worked at the National Security Agency and the CIA, said that the declassified Republican House report was \u201cprobably the lightest redaction of the most sensitive document I\u2019ve ever seen\u201d and that it could have potentially damaging consequences.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-aa4df9\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen our intelligence community leaders conduct end-runs around procedures established to protect sources and methods, they put at grave risk foreign sources risking life and limb to give us information vital to our security,\u201d Pfeiffer said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7486ad\" class=\"body-graf\">Gabbard claimed in the White House briefing room July 23 that the Republican House report showed that the Obama administration fabricated intelligence that Russia waged information warfare to try to help Trump win the election. Former President Barack Obama and former officials in his administration have dismissed the accusation as totally baseless.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e1c12e\" class=\"body-graf\">Other Trump administration officials, including Ratcliffe, have issued a series of reports and declassified documents making similar claims of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/tulsi-gabbard-treason-allegation-obama-world-rcna220730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plot by the Obama administration<\/a> to play up Russia\u2019s influence efforts in the 2016 election and to sabotage Trump\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dc1461\" class=\"body-graf\">On Monday, Attorney General Pam Bondi directed Justice Department prosecutors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/pam-bondi-orders-grand-jury-probe-obama-admin-review-2016-election-rcna223016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">launch a grand jury investigation<\/a> into the Obama administration&#8217;s review of Russia&#8217;s actions related to the 2016 election, a senior Trump administration official said. A letter signed by Bondi does not say what the charges would be, whom the grand jury would investigate or where it will meet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f298f5\" class=\"body-graf\">A senior former Justice Department official dismissed the investigation as \u201ca dangerous political stunt.\u201d Democrats have called it a Trump administration effort to distract attention from its failure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/jeffrey-epstein-fallout-trump-administration-maga-greatest-hits-rcna220038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release files in the case of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-56ae45\" class=\"body-graf\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligence.senate.gov\/2020\/08\/18\/publications-report-select-committee-intelligence-united-states-senate-russian-active-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bipartisan Senate intelligence report in 2020<\/a> endorsed the intelligence community\u2019s analysis that the Kremlin sought to help Trump win the election.
