The SNL50: The Anniversary Special<\/a> was one of the biggest moments in \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d history earlier this year, but a few SNL familiar faces were notably missing. <\/p>\n

Bill Hader and Dan Aykroyd<\/a> were two of the top \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d stars who skipped the event, and Hader has finally revealed why he missed it.<\/p>\n

Hader stopped by \u201cLate Night with Seth Meyers<\/a>\u201d to reunite with his SNL co-star, host Seth Meyers, with whom he often paired up for Hader\u2019s most famous character, Stefan. <\/p>\n

Meyers brought up how open Hader has been about his anxiety after leaving SNL, and that was ultimately the reason that he did not attend SNL50<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For those who watched the SNL50 special on Peacock<\/a>, that might seem quite ironic, as there was a pre-recorded digital short about everyone at SNL having anxiety. When asked if that skit was based on Hader\u2019s decision, he revealed he had originally been written into that sketch.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndy called me and was like, \u2018Hey, so we\u2019re doing this short about how everybody had anxiety. And it\u2019s me calling you,\u2019\u201d Hader said, regarding Andy Samberg calling him to pitch the sketch, to which Hader said, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I want to do that.\u201d When pressed by Andy, Hader doubled down and said, \u201cI don\u2019t want to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He chose to skip out on the short about \u201ceveryone at SNL\u201d having anxiety, because of his anxiety. <\/p>\n

The short still ran during the anniversary special, but ultimately, current-SNL star Bowen Yang played the other half alongside Samberg. <\/p>\n

The Anxiety Digital Short<\/a> certainly seems to have been written very tongue-in-cheek, based on Hader\u2019s choice to sit it out. This isn\u2019t very surprising given Samberg\u2019s close relationship with Hader<\/a> and his playful writing style. <\/p>\n

Particularly, the opening credits, where Samberg calls Yang asking him if he\u2019s attending the anniversary or not, are an obvious sign that Samberg was still thinking of Hader when they put the skit together.<\/p>\n

Hader was on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d from 2005 to 2013 and has not returned to the program to host since his departure. He did return for the 40th anniversary special in 2015 to reprise his Californians character<\/a>.<\/p>\n
