SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Many families are scrambling to find solutions after a charter school shut down just five days before the first day of the school year.<\/p>\n

Bexar County Academy announced Wednesday it would not reopen for the 2025\u20132026 academic year. Classes were supposed to begin Monday.<\/p>\n

The decision caught parents like Regina Vogelsberg off guard, who has been preparing for her daughter to return to school. <\/p>\n

\u201cI just want my daughter to get the education she needs,\u201d Vogelsberg said. \u201cThis last-minute thing is just putting one hell of a frustration on me.\u201d <\/p>\n

The letter stated that the school\u2019s Board of Directors voted to voluntarily surrender the school\u2019s charter to the Texas Education Agency. <\/p>\n

However, it also revealed the closure was made official on July 31 \u2014 a full week before families were notified. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t they tell us ahead of time?\u201d Vogelsberg asked. \u201cEspecially not finding out until after August.\u201d <\/p>\n

Adding to the confusion, the school\u2019s principal told KSAT there was no clear information on the schools future<\/a> on Tuesday, days after the board finalized its decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no answers,\u201d the principal said Tuesday. \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen \u2014 and that\u2019s the god honest truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Texas Education Agency, charter holder Academy of America held a board meeting on July 24 and voted to close Bexar County Academy the following week.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear why notice wasn\u2019t given to families earlier, particularly before the summer break, when many parents begin planning for the upcoming school year. <\/p>\n

\u201c(The Superintendent) should have said to everybody before summer started that there might be a possibility the school could close,\u201d Vogelsberg said. \u201cI would\u2019ve actually had enough time to look around and explore other schools.\u201d <\/p>\n

The closure is especially concerning for Vogelsberg, whose daughter has learning disabilities and had been making progress at the school.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has learning disabilities, but with that school, they have helped her in so many ways that I don\u2019t think any other school probably would,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

According to the letter from Bexar County Academy, parents who need access to their child\u2019s school records can call (210) 432-8600.<\/p>\n

The Texas Education Agency encourages families seeking alternative schools to visit its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n
