Amid <a id=\"rk6jg7mhWOex\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/article\/skvxuqxdxl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accusations of famine in Gaza<\/a>, some 1,300 EU institution employees have sent a sharply worded letter to the bloc\u2019s top leaders, demanding immediate sanctions on Israel and decisive measures to restore humanitarian aid to the <a id=\"ryAolXX311Oee\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/topics\/Gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gaza Strip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, expressed \u201cdeep concern and utmost urgency\u201d over what they described as Gaza\u2019s \u201chumanitarian disaster.\u201d The authors warned that famine in the territory \u201cis accelerating at an exponential rate\u201d and could cause \u201chundreds of deaths per day, mostly among children,\u201d within weeks.<\/p>\n<p>They dismissed partial measures such as limited aid drops or constrained supply routes as insufficient, writing: \u201cSilence by the EU at this moment means complicity in a crime.\u201d They argued that the Union\u2019s core values\u2014human dignity, freedom, equality, democracy, and the rule of law\u2014face a \u201cdecisive moral test,\u201d and that failure to act risks undermining the legitimacy of the entire European project.<\/p>\n<p>The letter also criticized the U.S.-funded Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF), which they claimed had indirectly contributed to the deaths of more than 1,000 Palestinian civilians by relying on Israeli military coordination. The GHF has rejected the allegation as false, saying Hamas inflated the numbers and that the militant group itself killed civilians seeking aid.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals for action included:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-ul\" data-offset-key=\"4eg1m-0-0\">\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-reset public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fuej9\" data-offset-key=\"4eg1m-0-0\">\n<p>Targeted sanctions on Israeli entities and senior officials are allegedly blocking humanitarian access, including restrictions on financial transactions and export controls.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fuej9\" data-offset-key=\"2r53p-0-0\">\n<p>Ending cooperation with Israel on EU research and development projects, including the Horizon science program.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fuej9\" data-offset-key=\"ftte9-0-0\">\n<p>Leading a coordinated international effort at the United Nations and other forums to secure safe humanitarian corridors into Gaza.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fuej9\" data-offset-key=\"f68ha-0-0\">\n<p>Suspending diplomatic ties and recalling the EU ambassador from Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"fuej9\" data-offset-key=\"5gscd-0-0\">\n<p>Freezing all ongoing cooperation talks with Israeli institutions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The letter ended with a warning: \u201cThe EU has always presented itself as a global protector of human rights. We must not allow this tragedy to deepen. They urged the EU to use its economic leverage as Israel\u2019s main trading partner to end what they called a \u201chumanitarian siege\u201d and to allow immediate, unhindered aid deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>While the letter is diplomatically troubling for Israel, it is unlikely to tip the balance against it\u2014at least for now\u2014given Germany\u2019s opposition to sanctions. EU foreign ministers will hold an informal meeting later this month to discuss a partial suspension of Israel from the Horizon program.<\/p>\n<p>Though such meetings do not produce binding decisions, any shift by Germany could prompt the EU to act immediately. Jerusalem is well aware that a full Israeli occupation of Gaza\u2014a possibility under cabinet discussion\u2014could dramatically alter the calculus.<\/p>\n<p>Maj. Gen. (res.) Amnon Sofrin, former head of the Mossad\u2019s intelligence division, cautioned: \u201cA full occupation of Gaza would rally the entire Western world against us.
