As a result, he saw a preview for a horror film.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-03\/what-australian-teenagers-think-about-youtube-social-media-bans\/105591760\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What teens think about YouTube ban <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australian teenagers share their opinions on losing YouTube when it becomes part of the government&#8217;s social media bans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He is still talking about [it] and being frightened and wanting to come into our bed,&#8221; says Tilly, who asked us not to use her full name for privacy reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the family does not post on social media, she is relieved to now be able to say, &#8220;and the government also said that you guys won&#8217;t be allowed to have it until you&#8217;re 16&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But, Tilly says &#8220;the struggle is real&#8221; when it comes to managing screen time and social media use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With the social media ban for under-16s set to come into effect later this year, experts share ways to effectively manage YouTube use in preparation.<\/p>\n<p>How is YouTube affected by the social media ban?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The federal government&#8217;s <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-30\/teen-social-media-ban-explained\/105590990\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105590990\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media ban for under-16s<\/a> is set to come into effect on December 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After some back and forth, the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-01\/youtube-social-media-ban-backflip-analysis\/105590400\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105590400\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">government says it will include YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kids will still be able to access the site&#8217;s content, but they will not be able to have an account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Without one, they will be unable to view age-restricted content, leave comments or upload their own videos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">YouTube Kids is exempt because accounts cannot upload content or comment on videos.<\/p>\n<p>Practical ways to help reduce use<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Behaviour support practitioner Anne Dobson works with children through the NDIS, and says &#8220;boundaries need to be set in anything&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A former teacher, she advises parents to <strong>support kids to understand and access &#8220;appropriate content&#8221;<\/strong>, which might look like <strong>transitioning from a YouTube account to a YouTube Kids profile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Dobson says <strong>setting clear time limits on screen time and internet access<\/strong> can also help. <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/parents\/issues-and-advice\/parental-controls\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Parental controls<\/strong><\/a> can be set up on some wi-fi routers and devices.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Parenting expert Justin Coulson surrounded by his 6 daughters\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/06c6fb08437493e4005dcd1725ce28cd\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Justin Coulson says &#8220;parents don&#8217;t need to do high-tech things to be across what&#8217;s going on with their kids&#8221;. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Parenting expert and father to six, Justin Coulson says, &#8220;the first thing that I would be doing is <strong>having the kids sign out of YouTube<\/strong> [on any accounts they have]&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Beyond that, it comes down to <strong>monitoring and supervising<\/strong>, says Dr Coulson \u2014 who holds a PhD in psychology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He advises <strong>being in the same room, making sure a device screen is facing into the room and keeping devices out of bedrooms and bathrooms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These are basic things. They&#8217;re not high-tech things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How to talk to your kids about the social media ban<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Coulson recommends using the three E&#8217;s of effective discipline \u2014 <strong>explain, explore and empower <\/strong>\u2014 to investigate how children are feeling about the upcoming changes to social media use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We need to explain where we&#8217;re coming from and help them recognise that their perspective is just one \u2026 we want to explain by providing really clear rationale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As a parent or guardian, he says to explore your child&#8217;s perspective, with &#8220;empower&#8221; meaning &#8220;we work on a solution together&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If they make a decision that is inconsistent with our values, the framework or rules that we&#8217;re trying to work within, we explain that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Ideally, our children will come up with a solution that they can feel good about that meets with our expectations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A headshot of a Carol Markie-Dadds widely smiling in a navy floral dress, with a hedge in the background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/41a4366cb9891d280d382a830b22ca7f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Carol Markie-Dadds says it is important that parents and carers start having discussions about the social media changes now. (Supplied: Triple P)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Coulson says: &#8220;The government is doing every family a favour with this legislation \u2026 parents can literally say &#8216;I agree with it but it&#8217;s not actually me, it&#8217;s the government.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Carol Markie-Dadds is the country director of Triple P International, which delivers education and support for parents. She says it is best to <strong>have these conversations as soon as possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is likely to be most challenging for those teenagers who have or had social media accounts, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Frustration and disappointment may come up and she recommends <strong>making time &#8220;to process those emotions with our children <\/strong>and find out what it is that they think they&#8217;re missing out on as a result of the change&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Are there other ways in which we can provide a solution for them to meet the need?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why your behaviour is also important<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Dobson says if you are setting boundaries for the children in a household, the adults ought to have some, too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-29\/what-to-do-if-your-child-sees-something-disturbing-online\/10915842\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">When your child sees distressing content online<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Internet safety experts share their advice on how to help a child who&#8217;s stumbled across graphic footage, explicit images or other inappropriate sites online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That needs to be a commitment for the whole family \u2026 <strong>parents need to model what those boundaries look like<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Markie-Dadds acknowledges that it can be hard for parents to be good role models, as they can struggle with time away from devices too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She says this could look like <strong>no-go zones for devices in the home <\/strong>(such as the dinner table) and keeping devices out of bedrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Having a really good routine about when and where we use devices and when and where we don&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She says each family will need to come up with a plan that suits their individual needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tilly is a &#8220;pretty strict&#8221; parent when it comes to screen time, electronic devices and social media.
