{"id":126024,"date":"2025-08-07T09:53:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T09:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/126024\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T09:53:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T09:53:11","slug":"guardians-gavin-williams-on-missed-no-hitter-pitch-count-wasnt-factor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/126024\/","title":{"rendered":"Guardians&#8217; Gavin Williams on missed no-hitter: Pitch count wasn&#8217;t factor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gavin Williams didn\u2019t want to come out of the game, and Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt had no plans to remove his pitcher with a chance to make history.<\/p>\n<p>With no one warming up in the bullpen, Williams carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/06\/sports\/juan-soto-saves-mets-from-no-hitter-but-still-hears-boos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before Juan Soto spoiled it<\/a> with a solo home run with just two outs to go in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/06\/sports\/mets-narrowly-avoid-getting-no-hit-by-gavin-williams-as-they-get-swept\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardians\u2019 4-1 win over the Mets<\/a> on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing into the ninth was pretty fun, pretty special,\u201d the 26-year-old Williams said following his 126-pitch masterpiece, exceeding his previous season high of 109. \u201cAt that point I didn\u2019t even care about the pitch count.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t matter if I went to 140 pitches. I would have done it anyway. It was pretty special to be out there. You never know when that\u2019s gonna happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Cleveland franchise hasn\u2019t thrown a no-hitter since Len Barker\u2019s perfect game in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Vogt said he didn\u2019t even ask Williams how he was feeling after he\u2019d retired 14 batters in a row to complete the eighth at 111 pitches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think one of the things you look at is the [velocity], and the velo was still there. The stuff was crisp,\u201d Vogt said. \u201cI didn\u2019t dare ask him. \u2026 It was one of those things with a four-run lead like that, you gotta let him go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know how many chances these pitchers are ever going to have to do it. He was going to get to go the whole way. \u2026 So we didn\u2019t touch the phone. We didn\u2019t talk to anybody. Robert Sabo \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>And it did so just barely, just beyond the reach of leaping center fielder Angel Mart\u00ednez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I could be Spiderman. I was real close. I tried my best,\u201d Mart\u00ednez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Soto clipped it. I knew he got it. Charles Wenzelberg \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>Williams said he hoped to induce a ground ball in that situation, but he elevated a fastball just enough for Soto to drive it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood fastball, good swing,\u201d catcher Austin Hedges said. \u201cI\u2019ve sadly been back there for quite a few of [Soto\u2019s] homers, so I know what it sounds like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took a really good swing and there\u2019s a reason he\u2019s one of the best hitters in this league.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, two of the Mets\u2019 other top hitters \u2014 Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso \u2014 smacked liners back at Williams in the first inning, with Lindor knocking the glove off his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt scared me, I\u2019ll say that.
