JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 If you\u2019re heading through Downtown Jacksonville next week, plan for delays. <\/p>\n

The Main Street Bridge (State Road 5) will be closed to all vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians Monday, Aug. 11, through Friday, Aug. 16, for an important bridge inspection and maintenance project.<\/p>\n

The work is part of a larger rehabilitation effort to evaluate the bridge\u2019s mechanical systems and structural health.<\/p>\n

Crews are conducting a LiDAR (Laser Imaging, Detection, and Ranging) scan, along with a full mechanical inspection of the bridge\u2019s lift system. This includes the trunnion bearings \u2014 large pivot points that act like the bridge\u2019s \u201cshoulder joints,\u201d allowing it to open and close for vessel traffic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese parts wear down over time,\u201d FDOT said in a statement, \u201cand the data collected this week will help engineers plan a major trunnion replacement scheduled for early 2028.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Acosta Bridge is the official detour, and drivers should expect about a two-minute delay depending on traffic flow. Vessels traveling beneath the Main Street Bridge will not be impacted by the closure.<\/p>\n

The timing also coincides with Duval County schools resuming for the new academic year, so drivers are encouraged to allow for extra travel time during the morning and afternoon commute.<\/p>\n
