{"id":126095,"date":"2025-08-07T10:30:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T10:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/126095\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T10:30:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T10:30:14","slug":"p-e-i-latest-province-to-ban-outdoor-burning-amid-dry-conditions-wildfire-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/126095\/","title":{"rendered":"P.E.I. latest province to ban outdoor burning amid dry conditions, wildfire fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A ban on all types of outdoor burning is in effect across Prince Edward Island as of Wednesday, while the province is looking at additional measures to combat potential wildfires\u00a0during a\u00a0dry spell across Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n<p>There is an exemption for fires being used for cooking or heat, but the P.E.I. government\u00a0is asking anyone who lights one of those\u00a0to\u00a0be mindful of their surroundings and make sure the fire is completely out before they leave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Open-fire bans are currently in place in all four Atlantic\u00a0provinces due to the elevated fire risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nova Scotia has\u00a0also\u00a0restricted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/restrictions-on-trails-woods-causes-complications-for-some-residents-visitors-1.7602289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hiking, camping, fishing and\u00a0all-terrain vehicle\u00a0use<\/a> in wooded areas. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/nl-wildfires-relief-aug-6-new-brunswick-water-bombers-1.7602341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New Brunswick\u00a0is sending water bombers<\/a> to help fight\u00a0ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/nl-fire-aug-6-1.7602064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ciffc.net\/situation\/2025-08-06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre<\/a>, the national preparedness level is currently\u00a0at a five on a five-point scale as of Wednesday. That means the potential for new, significant wildland fires is &#8220;high to extreme,&#8221; and the demand on firefighting agencies and their resources is high.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mike\u00a0Montigny, manager of field services\u00a0with P.E.I.&#8217;s forests, fish and wildlife division, said this\u00a0province is experiencing\u00a0similar dry conditions as its neighbouring provinces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we&#8217;re looking at our forecast, we&#8217;re not seeing a lot of precipitation coming into the&#8230; foreseeable future,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re aware of that and that&#8217;s why we&#8217;re looking at the data every single day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Montigny said provincial officials have been in talks about adding more\u00a0measures to prevent wildfires \u2014 including possibly restricting trail use as Nova Scotia did.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A man in a collared shirt, a bookshelf and filing cabinet is behind him.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/mike-montigny-png.png\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.956882255389718\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Mike Montigny, manager of field services with P.E.I.&#8217;s forests, fish and wildlife division, says the Island&#8217;s wildland firefighters are ready in case they&#8217;re needed in this province. (Zoom)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I completely understand why Nova Scotia has gone that way, and if and when those conditions are right for us here, absolutely that will be the recommendation\u00a0that&#8217;s made,&#8221; he said, adding that\u00a0officials are\u00a0looking at data to ensure\u00a0their decisions are backed by science.<\/p>\n<p>The current restrictions on Nova Scotia&#8217;s\u00a0provincial\u00a0Crown land are in effect until Oct. 15, or until weather conditions allow them to be lifted.
