Andrew Cuomo called reporting that he talked over the phone to President Trump<\/a> about his mayoral bid \u201cfalse\u201d and dismissed it as \u201cgossip\u201d at a press conference Thursday.<\/p>\n

Cuomo, who\u2019s running as an independent in November\u2019s mayoral election, also said at the Midtown press conference he would not \u201cseek\u201d or \u201caccept\u201d Trump\u2019s endorsement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never spoken to him about the mayor\u2019s race,\u201d Cuomo said, adding he \u201ccould not remember\u201d the last time he spoke to Trump but that he had called and left a voicemail for the president after the assassination attempt<\/a> against him last year.<\/p>\n

The New York Times reported Wednesday that Trump spoke recently to Cuomo and a pollster who worked for a pro-Cuomo super PAC as the president considers getting involved in the mayoral race<\/a> to try to defeat Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, who\u2019s polling as the favorite to win November\u2019s election.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re confident in the accuracy of our reporting,\u201d said Danielle Rhoades, a spokesperson for The Times.<\/p>\n

The ex-governor said that, as mayor, he\u2019d be open to working with the president when their interests aligned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will defend New York against any policy that I think hurts New York, New York State or New York City, but I will put my hand out to work in any way that he could be helpful to New York State or New York City,\u201d he said, naming healthcare and sanctuary city status as two areas he\u2019d confront Trump on.<\/p>\n

Earler Thursday,\u00a0Mamdani<\/a> blasted the former governor for \u201cconspiring with President Trump about the fate of this city\u201d in response to the reporting. He said at a Thursday morning press conference that the phone call \u201cbuilds on a history that we have seen with this former governor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that Andrew Cuomo will sell working people out for his interests, for the interests of the billionaires that supported him, for the interests of Donald Trump, because all of those interests are lining up as one and the same,\u201d Mamdani said at the press conference, where he appeared with labor leaders.<\/p>\n

There was overlap between Cuomo\u2019s donor base in the primary with Trump supporters<\/a>, including billionaire Bill Ackman.<\/p>\n

From the Oval Office, Trump denied speaking to Cuomo<\/a>. The president has previously claimed Mamdani is a \u201ccommunist\u201d \u2014 he actually identifies as a democratic socialist \u2014 and said his election would be a disaster for the city.<\/p>\n

Mamdani said that while he himself hasn\u2019t spoken to Trump, he\u2019d be willing to, but that he would repeat to the president that his leadership has betrayed Americans and failed to deliver on the cost of living promises<\/a> that got him to office.<\/p>\n

Trump is an unpopular figure<\/a> in the city, and it\u2019s unlikely his endorsement or promotion of a candidate would help their candidacy. Mayor Adams faced widespread backlash and dropping approval ratings as he courted Trump for months. The mayor has also been accused of entering into a corrupt deal with Trump to get his federal corruption indictment dropped<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Yorkers do not want a mayor who is working in tandem with the president to subvert the will of the people of this city,\u201d Mamdani said Thursday.<\/p>\n

Asked at an unrelated press conference in Brooklyn about The Times\u2019 report, Adams said he hasn\u2019t spoken to the president about his campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy conversations with the president is about bringing resources to the city,\u201d he said, later adding he couldn\u2019t recall the last time he spoke with Trump, either.<\/p>\n

The mayor added he believes Trump \u201cloves New York\u201d and, without mentioning Mamdani by name, suggested the president\u2019s potential involvement is about stopping the Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everyone sees, you know, the threats we\u2019re facing,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n
