Discovery Ad Sales Efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA tough bounce \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/media-giants-scramble-nba-ad-dollars-basketball-1236343654\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the loss of rights to show NBA games<\/a> \u2014 likely crimped <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/warner-bros-discovery\/\" id=\"auto-tag_warner-bros-discovery\" data-tag=\"warner-bros-discovery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Warner Bros. Discovery<\/a>\u2018s  ability to attract advertising dollars during the most recent TV \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/upfront\/\" id=\"auto-tag_upfront\" data-tag=\"upfront\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upfront<\/a>\u201d market, with the company declining to reveal its level of ad commitments despite most of its rivals having done so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe company acknowledged Thursday in a letter to shareholders that \u201cnegotiations for the U.S. upfront are largely complete,\u201d noting that it \u201cenjoyed strong pricing and resilient demand for sports programming, and firm pricing for general entertainment.\u201d But there was no guidance for whether the volume of ad commitments it secured was greater than, equal to, or lower than what it nabbed in 2024. In the past, such an absence of disclosure has indicated a downturn in upfront commitments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWarner was projected to lose $1.1 billion in TV advertising in 2026, approximately 23% of its total this year, according to a March research note by Robert Fishman, an analyst with MoffettNathanson, due in significant part to the absence of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/nba\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA<\/a>\u00a0on its networks for the first time since 1989. In the upfront, U.S. TV companies try to sell the bulk of their commercial inventory tied to their next cycle of programming. Warner Bros. Discovery on Thursday declined to offer any details on the volume of deals it secured in this year\u2019s upfront market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIndeed, one of the companies that secured a new rights deals with the basketball league said its upfront deals hit record levels. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/nba-finalizes-rights-deals-nbc-amazon-espn-warner-showdown-1236066478\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBCUniversal said in August that its new 11-year deal for NBA rights<\/a>\u00a0resulted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/nbcuniversal-tv-upfront-sports-advertising-surge-1236460926\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">15% increase in \u201cupfront\u201d ad commitments <\/a>across its core broadcast offerings of news, sports and entertainment, with a quarter of its NBA sponsors new to traditional linear TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNBCU, Disney, Fox, Paramount and TelevisaUnivision have all offered guidance on volume tied to their upfront sales. NBCU and Fox were boosted by sports events they have in 2026. NBCU will telecast the Winter Olympic and Super Bowl next year, while its Telemundo has Spanish-language rights to the World Cup. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fox-sports-news-tv-upfront-advertising-dollars-grow-1236466033\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fox, meanwhile, has English-language World Cup rights.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCompanies without limited-run sports specials seemed to run even with last year\u2019s sales efforts. Disney, Paramount and TelevisaUnivision all <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/disney-upfront-volume-flat-sports-streaming-advertising-1236473390\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indicated upfront commitments were flat<\/a> with what they had achieved in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring a call with investors Thursday, Warner executives seemed sanguine about their upfront sales. \u201cWe obviously had some concerns going into the year with the macroeconomic and geopolitical environment. And fact of the matter is the market has held up very well,\u201d said Gunnar Wiedenfels, Warner\u2019s CFO, who will become CEO of a new company that will house all of the current entity\u2019s TV assets. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen prices up across all categories, and more so in sports than in general entertainment. On the digital side, there is some price pressure, but we\u2019ve maintained a very strong price premium for the quality of inventory that we\u2019re delivering. So, net-net, I\u2019m very happy with the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWarner Bros. Discovery may have more to figure out after its loss of NBA rights. Exiting the relationship is likely to give it more cash that it can spend on other content. At the same time, Warner without the NBA is also without a reason it regularly gave Madison Avenue to strike deals. As the company noted in its shareholder letter Thursday, \u201cWe will not have the NBA in the U.S. beginning in the fourth quarter,<br \/>which will impact both advertising revenues and cost of revenues.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A tough bounce \u2014 the loss of rights to show NBA games \u2014 likely crimped Warner Bros.
