{"id":127407,"date":"2025-08-07T21:58:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T21:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/127407\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T21:58:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T21:58:12","slug":"close-bear-encounters-lead-to-warnings-closures-in-popular-parts-of-kananaskis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/127407\/","title":{"rendered":"Close bear encounters lead to warnings, closures in popular parts of Kananaskis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Three recent encounters with bears in Kananaskis Country have led Alberta Parks to issue new warnings,\u00a0bringing the total number of advisories up to fourteen.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The encounters, all of which resulted in bear spray being used, led to warnings at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/kananaskis-country\/advisories-public-safety\/trail-reports\/kananaskis-valley\/kovach-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kovach Trail<\/a>, effective Aug. 1,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/kananaskis-country\/advisories-public-safety\/trail-reports\/kananaskis-valley\/galatea-creek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Galatea Trail<\/a>, effective Aug. 2, and part of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Mount Shark Road, effective Aug. 6.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The incidents\u00a0were among &#8220;several encounters with bears over the long weekend across Kananaskis,&#8221;\u00a0Neil Singh,\u00a0Ministry of Forestry and Parks press secretary, said in a statement to CBC News.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Aug. 1 incident involved a bear bluff charging two hikers around the Little Kidd Lookout area at Kovach Trail. Bluff charging refers to behaviour in which a bear charges\u00a0toward a perceived threat, but stops short of making contact.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The Kovach instance was reported as a grizzly bear, but there are numerous, brown-coloured black bears in the Kovach area,&#8221; Singh said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Aug. 2, there was a &#8220;close bear encounter&#8221; with an unknown, brown-coloured bear, which\u00a0involved four hikers with an on-leash dog, Singh said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Aug. 6 incident involved a cyclist deploying bear spray during an encounter with a grizzly bear in the area\u00a0between Mount Shark Road and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/spray-valley-pp\/information-facilities\/day-use\/sparrowhawk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sparrowhawk Day Use<\/a> on the Smith-Dorrien Trail highway. That bear warning is accompanied by an advisory regarding multiple grizzly bears feeding on berries in the area.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kovach Trail is a popular hiking area located near Kananaskis Village, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/evan-thomas-pra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Evan-Thomas Provincial Recreation Area<\/a>. (Amir Said\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A total of eleven bear warnings and three closures are\u00a0in effect throughout Kananaskis Country.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A grizzly bear has been observed feeding on a cow carcass\u00a0in the area south of Gorge Creek trail, resulting in a closure from that area\u00a0west to Bluerock Creek Trail and east to Indian Oils trail gate, including all trails and routes within that area, effective Aug. 6.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/spray-valley-pp\/information-facilities\/day-use\/buller-mountain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Buller Mountain Day Use<\/a> area, including\u00a0Buller Pond Hiker-Biker Camping, is closed because of multiple grizzly bears, including mothers with cubs, feeding on berries in the area, effective Aug. 6.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/kananaskis-country\/advisories-public-safety\/trail-reports\/kananaskis-valley\/bill-milne-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bill Milne Trail<\/a>\u00a0from Kananaskis Village to Mount Kidd RV Park is also, with\u00a0multiple grizzly and black bears being seen feeding on berries in the area, effective Aug. 7.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bill Milne Trail\u00a0remains open from Wedge Pond to Mount Allan Drive, but a grizzly bear bluff charging a hiker in that area led to a warning there that remains in place\u00a0effective July 8.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A black bear.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754603892_886_bear.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4713216957605986\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>A black bear eating buffaloberries in Kananaskis Country. (Amir Said\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Another recently-issued bear warning is in effect at Highway 40 day-use areas from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/bow-valley-pp\/information-facilities\/camping\/canoe-meadows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canoe Meadows<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/bow-valley-pp\/information-facilities\/day-use\/barrier-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Barrier Boat Launch<\/a> as of July 30, due to a grizzly bear with a cub seen frequenting the area to feed on vegetation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A warning is in place for all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/peter-lougheed-pp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Peter Lougheed Provincial Park<\/a> campgrounds, effective July 27, due to &#8220;multiple grizzly and black bears frequenting the campgrounds,&#8221; according to Alberta Parks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">An adult grizzly bear seen in the trail network behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.ucalgary.ca\/biogeoscience-institute\/facilities\/barrier-lake-station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">University of Calgary Barrier Lake Research Station<\/a> led to a warning, effective July 16, issued for Lusk Creek, Stoney Creek Group Campground, and the research station.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Warnings stemming from an increase in black bear sightings are in place for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/canmore-nordic-centre-pp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/parks\/kananaskis\/kananaskis-country\/advisories-public-safety\/trail-reports\/canmore-and-area\/grassi-lakes-interpretive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Grassi Lakes<\/a> trail system.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">People should be on the lookout for bears and use spray if one comes within four metres, according to Alberta Parks.
