{"id":127749,"date":"2025-08-08T01:00:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T01:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/127749\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T01:00:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T01:00:09","slug":"cleveland-water-reassures-west-siders-that-yellow-water-is-safe-to-drink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/127749\/","title":{"rendered":"Cleveland Water reassures west-siders that \u2018yellow\u2019 water is safe to drink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ENYAG5ESEZHO7E6CYAWDS3RC4Y\">WESTLAKE, Ohio &#8212; Area residents recently posted concerns on social media about the quality of their tap water because it had an unusual yellow tint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EPRTAL7G3FEEDFOEPRVBBMLOQE\">Local officials, including Bay Village City Councilwoman Lydia DeGeorge, posted reassurances on Facebook to constituents that the water was safe to drink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TQBZPSH2RVDLJHWIOXQNN7IQHM\">She said the discoloration resulted from low oxygen levels in Lake Erie. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E73LI3RPPNGA7EEBINGLOVBL5A\">DeGeorge suggested that concerned residents contact the Cleveland Water Division, which supplies water throughout much of Cuyahoga County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7LUPUORWBBGRJKYNS7G3LCU36U\">The City of Cleveland Water Division said that some customers in the northwestern portion of their service area might have experienced discolored water this week (week of Aug. 3). <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VQ3R226XKBEOFJ3RFVZVATAX3I\">\u201cThis is due to low levels of oxygen in Lake Erie, causing excess minerals to dissolve into the water entering our Crown Treatment Plant,\u201d Danielle Miklos, manager of communications for the Division of Water, wrote in an emailed statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CVOHXDONVZATZA3R7D5LRMO2AM\">\u201cWhile unsightly, there are no health concerns or drinking water advisories. Water is safe to use as normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K4RXXAO4CZDX5KUX7IWQP6ZL54\">The plant, in Westlake, adjusted its water treatment methods to address the discoloration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IM2XM4TWBZEZ5CTNMUYZVQUGZA\">The water leaving the plant is now clear, but some remnants of the discolored water may still be in the distribution system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P3NPTARJDBANJKBVQ5J7ZW67HA\">\u201cOur crews are actively flushing hydrants throughout the affected area in an effort to remove the remaining amount,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UF6QZ23XY5FIHBKR556OOCBMUM\">If the discoloration persists for more than 48 hours, customers are asked to call the division\u2019s Water Quality Line at 216-664-2639.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C4AUG4ACQZEBTAMOJ65DX2MLIY\">The Crown Treatment Plant produces an average of 41.5 million gallons of water a day to deliver to the residents and businesses of Greater Cleveland\u2019s west side, including its western and southwestern suburbs, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandwater.com\/your-water\/water-treatment\/crown-water-treatment-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Water Division\u2019s website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MX52KTXCYREGPDLQ24WB2MSU3Q\">The discoloration affected communities including Bay Village, Fairview Park, Rocky River and parts of Lakewood and Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YNDU3WNZUVFFPC5ZK3XODQYXYU\">Hypoxia, or low levels of dissolved oxygen in bodies of water, occurs in waters all over the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ms-htf\/hypoxia-101#:~:text=Hypoxia%2C%20or%20low%20levels%20of,gradients%20-%20can%20create%20hypoxic%20conditions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the U.S. EPA<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UWMBETVXSJBWVDGSVIO6MEINLQ\">Sudden changes in lake temperatures and excess nutrients in the water can contribute to water becoming hypoxic, according to the federal agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CMQBXLL6QZDTDADKXYAW52XNPI\">Read more from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/westshoresun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">West Shore Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
