Once better known for politics and potholes than paychecks, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/02\/lifestyle\/forget-florida-this-new-york-town-has-become-a-surprise-hotspot-for-retirees\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the upstate hub<\/a> \u2014 just a little under a 3-hour drive from NYC \u2014 is now a rising star in high-tech jobs and semiconductor research.<\/p>\n<p>Albany came in at No. 4 on the list thanks to its boom in high-tech and chip research jobs.<br \/>Hans Pennink for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>The University at Albany pumps more than $1 billion into the local economy, with top employers like Regeneron and Albany Medical Center drawing talent \u2014 and paychecks averaging nearly $72,000. <\/p>\n<p>Median home listings hover around $604,000, making it pricier than many upstate peers but still a bargain compared to NYC.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the kicker \u2014 Albany didn\u2019t even nab the highest-ranking spot for a nearby market. That honor goes to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which somehow beat it at No. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania\u2019s capital \u2014 about <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/06\/lifestyle\/nyc-adjacent-small-town-named-a-top-charming-us-place-to-visit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three hours from Midtown<\/a> \u2014 scored high thanks to its low cost of living, healthcare expansion, and a tourism boost.<\/p>\n<p>With median home listings around $431,000 and an average income of $64,000, Harrisburg is attracting retirees and young professionals alike.<\/p>\n<p>Boise, Idaho, claimed No. 2 for its booming tech industry and mountain-town lifestyle, while Milwaukee, Wisconsin, rounded out the top five, buoyed by tech jobs and a surging tourism scene.<\/p>\n<p>But get this \u2014 Albany wasn\u2019t even the top dog nearby. SOPA Images\/LightRocket via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>LinkedIn says the ranking was based on hiring trends, job postings and talent migration \u2014 essentially, where Americans are packing up and moving for better career prospects without needing to sell a kidney for rent.<\/p>\n<p>The full top 25 list shows that the action is increasingly in mid-sized metros \u2014 from semiconductor-fueled Sacramento to biotech-booming Raleigh-Durham \u2014 not just in coastal megacities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LinkedIn\u2019s top 25 cities on the rise:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Grand Rapids, MI<\/li>\n<li>Boise, ID<\/li>\n<li>Harrisburg, PA<\/li>\n<li>Albany, NY<\/li>\n<li>Milwaukee, WI<\/li>\n<li>Portland, ME<\/li>\n<li>Myrtle Beach, SC<\/li>\n<li>Hartford, CT<\/li>\n<li>Nashville, TN<\/li>\n<li>Omaha, NE<\/li>\n<li>Kansas City, MO<\/li>\n<li>Wilmington, NC<\/li>\n<li>Richmond, VA<\/li>\n<li>Indianapolis, IN<\/li>\n<li>Colorado Springs, CO<\/li>\n<li>Sacramento, CA<\/li>\n<li>Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, SC<\/li>\n<li>Austin, TX<\/li>\n<li>Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC<\/li>\n<li>Portland, OR<\/li>\n<li>Fayetteville, AR<\/li>\n<li>Reno, NV<\/li>\n<li>San Antonio, TX<\/li>\n<li>Fort Wayne, IN<\/li>\n<li>Pensacola, FL<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So if you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/08\/lifestyle\/nyc-snubbed-in-new-ranking-of-the-best-cities-in-the-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">over subway delays and $20 cocktails<\/a>, Albany might be calling. Just don\u2019t tell Harrisburg \u2014 they\u2019re still enjoying their victory lap.<\/p>\n<p>And if neither capital city strikes your fancy, there\u2019s always Long Island, where another community just nabbed bragging rights of its own.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/22\/real-estate\/these-are-the-best-places-to-live-in-america\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously reported<\/a> by The Post, New York\u2019s Massapequa Park was crowned the Empire State\u2019s best place to live in the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/realestate.usnews.com\/places\/rankings\/best-places-to-live?sort=overall&amp;high_to_low=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. News &amp; World Report rankings<\/a> \u2014 though it only came in at No. 140 nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Grand Rapids, Mich. (above), clinched the top spot, riding high on a surging tech scene and a booming insurance industry that\u2019s putting the city on the national map.
