{"id":128180,"date":"2025-08-08T04:48:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T04:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/128180\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T04:48:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T04:48:20","slug":"queensland-land-clearing-figures-show-state-remains-deforestation-capital-of-australia-conservationists-say-queensland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/128180\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland land-clearing figures show state remains \u2018deforestation capital of Australia\u2019, conservationists say | Queensland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Forest and woodland across an area more than 1,000 times the size of the Sydney CBD was bulldozed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/queensland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a> in 2022-23, newly published figures show, sparking warnings the state is escalating risks to endangered species and worsening climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Almost half (44%) of the 332,015 hectares of clearing was in Great Barrier Reef catchment areas, causing nutrient and sediment flow that puts additional pressure on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/aug\/05\/great-barrier-reef-suffers-biggest-annual-drop-in-live-coral-since-1980s-after-devastating-coral-bleaching\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corals already bleaching<\/a> due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qld.gov.au\/environment\/land\/management\/mapping\/statewide-monitoring\/slats\/slats-reports\/2022-23-slats-report\/statewide-breakdown\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state government land-clearing data for 2022-23<\/a>, published this week, shows overall clearing was up 3% on the previous year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Of the clearing, 21% (70,799 hectares) was remnant woodland, meaning it had not been cleared before or that it resembled uncleared forest, an increase of 8%. Remnant vegetation is important for biodiversity and supports endangered species such as the koala and greater glider.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/datawrapper\/embed\/9cwEy\/1\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland land clearing by region in hectares<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Dave Copeman, the director of the Queensland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/conservation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Conservation<\/a> Council, the state\u2019s peak conservation body, said the figures were \u201cshocking\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cQueenslanders and international visitors alike would be distressed to learn that the Queensland government is allowing forests and woodlands to be bulldozed in the Great Barrier Reef catchment at an alarming rate, with over 140,000 hectares being cleared per year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThis is devastating additional pressure on an already damaged Great Barrier Reef struggling to survive from repeated mass bleaching events. This clearing must stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/mar\/10\/sign-up-for-the-clear-air-australia-environment-newsletter-with-adam-morton?CMP=copyembed\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up to get climate and environment editor Adam Morton\u2019s Clear Air column as a free newsletter<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Australian Conservation Foundation\u2019s Nathaniel Pelle said the figures showed Queensland \u201cremains the deforestation capital of Australia\u201d and the government needed to tighten regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cIt is sadly no longer surprising to see big numbers coming out of Queensland when it comes to deforestation but what is most alarming is the jump in destruction of remnant forests and woodland, which is catastrophic for Queensland\u2019s wildlife and proves the state\u2019s vegetation management is not working,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">About 86% of the clearing (283,918ha) was for the expansion of pasture and 77% (254,647ha) was category X clearing, which means it did not require a permit under the state\u2019s vegetation management laws.
