{"id":128314,"date":"2025-08-08T06:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T06:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/128314\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T06:00:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T06:00:13","slug":"wildlife-officials-track-bear-50-miles-to-remove-jar-from-its-head","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/128314\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildlife officials track bear 50 miles to remove jar from its head"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LV6D75IUVNFPXPA2IJQQEGM53M\">The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources tracked a bear more than 50 miles for more than a week to remove a jar from its head. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P5JCGXO4JJGSXHOB4VEUG5KOQU\">The bear was first spotted in north central Sawyer County on July 26. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OVRMKYSJQJAYJBJYYA2GYD7IG4\">It was then reported multiple times across northern Sawyer County and southern Bayfield and Douglas counties before wildlife officials removed it near Cable on Aug. 3. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G62UU536D5APDJGCF6UJCNTSHI\">Staff from USDA Wildlife Services set several live traps to try and trap the bear, but those were initially unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZAEMKVNX4FFYLFTCTQ47WE5TNM\"> On Aug. 3, a trained wildlife professional responded to a private residence and was able to safely dart the bear with an immobilization drug.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CK2LRQHS4JHMRPXIFNKKUH2OFY\">Once the bear was sedated, USDA Wildlife Services staff were able to cut off the jug and examine the bear for injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CVQXTABEHJHMNGJPGBPOCLRMH4\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/06\/michigan-dnr-removes-plastic-lid-stuck-on-bears-neck-for-2-years.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/06\/michigan-dnr-removes-plastic-lid-stuck-on-bears-neck-for-2-years.html\">Michigan DNR removes plastic lid stuck on bear\u2019s neck for 2 years<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FB7ZWFOUKVHN7H76YNVHJ2IMCQ\">No lacerations or additional injuries were noted, and the approximately 70-pound, 2-year-old female bear was relocated to a safe, wooded area with ample food and water to allow for recovery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JCUP4H7GV5DXRFZX5GP3UPTDGE\">The bear was alert when released and quickly began feeding on a patch of berries nearby, officials said, noting that feeding on Wisconsin\u2019s abundant natural food sources give it the best chance for survival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZLUNC7GVQFDVJETV5K5BPIPWVE\">\u201cWe do not know how long the jug was on the bear\u2019s head, but it was a little skinny when captured. There were punctures in the jug \u2013 likely from the bear\u2019s claws \u2013 and a public observation indicated that it was able to drink by dunking its head in water,\u201d said Randy Johnson, DNR large carnivore specialist. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q7NEZQHGFNCMZNEJSROS6Y5QMQ\">\u201cThe bear was likely surviving on body fat reserves (which can be significant on bears by midsummer). A bear of that age and sex normally averages between 100-150 pounds this time of year.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YRJMQDY5P5GGFKRRNOY42TDLPM\">The bear received two plastic ear tags for identification, consistent with federal law regarding the administration of immobilization drugs in free-ranging wildlife. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HQM47QN7RFHCHGYXRS5LUKM57U\">The DNR and USDA Wildlife Services are thanking the public for reporting the bear as it moved across the landscape. <\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
