in the city&#8217;s urban core, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/not-rutherford-bean-emerald-trail-191326852.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Emerald Trail;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emerald Trail<\/a> and underutilized city parks, according to the foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The \u2018indoor childhood\u2019 is taking a toll on the physical, emotional and developmental health of today\u2019s youth and we see this as an urgent public health crisis,&#8221; said Sylia Obagi, foundation CEO, who is spearheading the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">U.S. children and teens spend an average of 7 hours of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.com\/story\/news\/nation-world\/2017\/06\/19\/smartphones-made-his-kids-moody-and-withdrawn-now-he-wants-ban-them\/15760132007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:screen time;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">screen time<\/a> a day and 10 minutes outside \u2014 90% of their time is indoors and on screens, according to the foundation. That imbalance has contributed to a &#8220;physical and mental health crisis among today\u2019s youth,&#8221; the foundation said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Research shows children who regularly spend time in nature have stronger social skills, improved focus, higher levels of self-confidence and greater physical health,&#8221; Obagi said. &#8220;By helping kids get off their devices and reconnect with the natural world right outside their doors, we create a positive cycle of change that improves the health of humans, wildlife and the environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The foundation is collaborating with the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenandnature.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Children &amp; Nature Network;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Children &amp; Nature Network<\/a>, which provides expert guidance, educational resources and strategic support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Nature is one of the most powerful tools we have to support children\u2019s growth, learning and resilience,&#8221; network President and CEO Sarah Milligan-Toffler said. &#8220;We have seen this work create lasting and positive change for children, families and communities across the U.S. and we welcome Jacksonville\u2019s leadership and engagement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.com\/story\/news\/2010\/04\/21\/first-coast-man-says-giving-back-community-one-great-assets-his-life\/15949409007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:James H. Winston;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">James H. Winston<\/a>, who died in 2018, was a Jacksonville civic leader, real estate developer and philanthropist. Additional grants are in development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Here is more information about the work the nonprofits will do:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Brentwood \u2014 Groundwork Jacksonville will organize weekly youth nature clubs and partnerships with local schools, &#8220;sparking a nature-powered movement.&#8221; The nonprofit is already transforming the northern stretch of the Emerald Trail S-Line into a nature hub, with a micro forest, play area and outdoor classroom.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Eastside \u2014 LIFT JAX will &#8220;weave urban farming, environmental stewardship and youth leadership into a dynamic vision for community wellness,&#8221; partnering parks, schools and gardens with youth-led urban farming and monthly eco-excursions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">New Town \u2014 LISC Jacksonville\u00a0will work with organizations that serve youth to provide nature-based after-school programming at S.P. Livingston Elementary. LISC will also plan nature-based park activities for families, school gardening and sensory-based nature exploration.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Springfield \u2014 The Partnership for Child Health\u00a0program features &#8220;screen-free wellness campaigns&#8221; and nature-based youth ecological stewardship activities.
