Fifty-three percent of people said grocery costs were a \u201cmajor\u201d stress, while 33% said they were a \u201cminor\u201d stress, according to the poll. Only 14% said groceries were not a source of stress.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme014cip00003b6ndar053tb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This was the first AP poll asking Americans about their stress over grocery prices, but other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/09\/consumers-changing-eating-shopping-habits-as-inflation-pushes-up-price.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">surveys<\/a> in recent years have shown that Americans are frustrated with grocery costs. The poll shows that Americans remain anxious over the high cost of food and the state of the economy, despite slowing inflation on groceries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme05s9dl0006356nu7c9lrkv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They\u2019re not just complaining to pollsters: Customers are making significant changes to what they buy at the grocery store and how they buy it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdz028ys001b3b6n5ufly2ri@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rate of inflation on groceries has come down significantly since a 9.4% peak in 2022, driven by supply chain bottlenecks. Grocery prices increased 2.4% for the last 12 months ending in June, according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/08\/business\/tracking-us-food-prices-eggs-dg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">consumer price index <\/a>reading.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdz04frk001e3b6npddkex9q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that doesn\u2019t mean that grocery prices have come down. In some cases, such as eggs, beef, orange juice and other items, prices have even accelerated due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/21\/business\/beef-prices-record-high\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supply changes<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/26\/business\/tropicana-orange-juice-bankruptcy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extreme weather<\/a>. There are signs that Trump\u2019s tariffs are impacting prices on imported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/06\/12\/inflation-banana-prices-tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fruits<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/the-canned-food-aisle-is-getting-squeezed-by-rising-steel-tariffs-c478693c?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAjd5sK6dTSjS8T9_LMTYorp79jV_vzIoae_hwXcUxDiDaCaNTUVB-UBY6l47Ko%3D&amp;gaa_ts=689270d0&amp;gaa_sig=wyTmEsFSxRYeo8s1I64mqDY5nPZtGLTBPdHbYHZVrBAVVs8YzVPxCdPrhQu_nZczSjS1-KMBvJaGrrrV4eTfkg%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">canned goods<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/31\/us\/video\/coffee-tariffs-trump-expensive-soares-vrtc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coffee <\/a>and other products.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme01vxyo00183b6nip5dnl6w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The poll results reflect unmet expectations over Trump\u2019s pledges on grocery prices and consumer uncertainty around the direction of the economy, said David Ortega, a food economist at Michigan State University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme01wz1b001h3b6nkho7ob6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consumers pay close attention to store prices and grocery bills shape their overall perceptions of the economy. \u201cWe\u2019re coming out of an inflationary period. People\u2019s budgets are strained. Everybody sees the price of food,\u201d Ortega said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdyzp0xf000m3b6ny1y8vfoo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The broader economy appears to be impacting consumer sentiment around groceries. Consumer confidence has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/29\/business\/consumer-confidence-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wobbled<\/a> in recent months over the Trump administration\u2019s trade policies. Recent reports on jobs and consumer spending also showed the economy may be more fragile than previously believed, and Trump\u2019s trade policy is playing a big part.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme01qj5t000z3b6ny204i3e5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is an environment with tremendous uncertainty around prices because of administration\u2019s tariff and trade policy,\u201d Ortega said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdyzs3ok000w3b6nxbly00sh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since the beginning of the year, Americans have fretted over the possibility of higher inflation because of Trump\u2019s trade war. But inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/15\/economy\/us-cpi-consumer-price-index-inflation-june\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has remained somewhat tame<\/a>, with only a few categories seeing prices pick up.<strong> <\/strong>That\u2019s because some businesses have chosen to absorb higher costs, and many are still stocked up with inventory they front-loaded in the beginning of the year, economists say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdz06g5j001i3b6nqrru4ya7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economists say it may just be a matter of time until inflation accelerates faster as inventories dry up and businesses feel the sting from tariffs. American businesses imported significantly less in June as higher tariffs kicked in, making it more expensive for them to buy foreign-produced goods, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdz0os78001r3b6nud2mngvz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Companies say consumers are strapped and adjusting their shopping patterns. They\u2019re buying smaller sizes, using coupons and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/economy\/consumers\/consumer-spending-stagnant-uncertainty-c4e3d043?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAhkIeRYRU7x8uhNqZNE1Y8tQE5G5gve9zekfc0SatXSrYOgrCAAg_QOX_sMmto%3D&amp;gaa_ts=6891fe68&amp;gaa_sig=dxJHchMnx2a7tAQOhVqSSqOK5eQlXxwAu0olo2dfnOjfBnm_SuCYURSkMjmfgFJeefGWMTolFmfYzHXX-Z2nAQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">skipping<\/a> discretionary items, purchasing only the essentials. They\u2019re also eating more meals at home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme01zsy9001p3b6n1q29k9qw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economists say these changes are a troubling sign and part of an economic slowdown that is impacting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/01\/economy\/us-jobs-report-july?iid=cnn_buildContentRecirc_end_recirc&amp;recs_exp=up-next-article-end&amp;tenant_id=related.en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">job market<\/a> and companies\u2019 growth plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdz1355s001y3b6nvcxrgs5b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCustomers continue to spend cautiously in an uncertain economic environment,\u201d Kroger interim CEO Ron Sargent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/kroger-lifts-annual-identical-sales-target-2025-06-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said <\/a>in June. \u201cBoth in high- and low-income levels, they\u2019re navigating a significant uncertainty.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdz12jt3001u3b6ngf63q3ce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kroger is stepping up promotions and expanding its store brands, which are typically cheaper than name brands, to draw shoppers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdz1knuq002h3b6nzn8n6yl7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mondelez, the owner of Oreo and Chips Ahoy, said consumers were buying fewer snacks, especially biscuits.
