{"id":128958,"date":"2025-08-08T11:52:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T11:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/128958\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T11:52:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T11:52:14","slug":"extended-stretch-of-heat-coming-to-upstate-ny-no-sign-of-it-turning-comfortable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/128958\/","title":{"rendered":"Extended stretch of heat coming to Upstate NY: \u2018No sign of it turning comfortable \u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QI6VOVXRJNBNNMT7XAWYMFNAYY\">Syracuse, N.Y. &#8212; An extended stretch of brutal, potentially record-breaking heat is likely to descend upon Upstate New York starting this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AMAWCI5XHVCJPIYRBZWRCPM3NU\">And there\u2019s not much relief in sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2N7LX6TY3ZHH7OYG6FPD2H6WPQ\">\u201cThere\u2019s no sign of it turning comfortable,\u201d said Accuweather meteorologist Bob Larson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4ST46O6IIRAF3PXJD7ESC5DRAY\">The heat starts to build today, with temperatures in Syracuse forecast to hit 89 degrees. It keeps getting hotter each day; by Tuesday, Larson said, Syracuse could hit 97, which would tie the Aug. 12 record, set in 1944.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PTNCSNYLKJB7LGE5QFUCEYVFTM\">Syracuse has already reached 90 degrees 12 times this year. That happens 10 times in a typical summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XGLYKLDI2RC6HNNW5HYXSEZ44I\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/07\/when-will-central-nys-brutal-stretch-of-hot-dry-weather-finally-end.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/07\/when-will-central-nys-brutal-stretch-of-hot-dry-weather-finally-end.html\">The summer so far is the ninth-hottest <\/a>on record in Syracuse. The hottest was 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5M6YUFX5UBAHJNZXLP5WRSPQDM\">By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to dip below 90, but not much below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6XISO5XIVVC6LAUDHA54465HIE\">\u201cWednesday through Friday, and even through next weekend, I think it\u2019s still mid and upper 80s,\u201d Larson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QBLW7LIIFVCAVOHUELJG3IBEYU\">The typical high temperatures in mid-August is 81 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Hot temperatures could linger in Upstate New York\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/EJAN7WMW5BEO5NQBSQPUXQXVWI.jpg\" \/>The National Weather Service&#8217;s Climate Prediction Center forecast shows the odds of hotter-than-normal temperatures next week in the Northeast are 70% to 80%.Climate Prediction Center<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5DTCE6KKD5FVFBXOW3ALKPN2KE\">The hot temperatures will be caused by a large system of high pressure, often called a heat dome, expected to be centered over Ontario and Quebec.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7NPZOOZ775GSJEPPTLXORUFUYM\">Humidity will be moderate during the hot stretch, Larson said, but it will still be sticky enough to make the air feel hotter than the thermometer indicates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZGSSCR6VL5DYNE4RHMWDFKTOWQ\">Scattered thunderstorms could pop up in the heat next week, but they won\u2019t bring much rain to parched Upstate New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GFJ4PPZ3E5BIHHDGVMXTDMIZZU\">\u201cIt might take until the end of next week for there to be something a little more substantial and widespread in terms of showers and storms,\u201d Larson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2Y6C642W6FDBPK6J76NWDX7Q54\">Nearly an inch of rain fell Tuesday in northern Onondaga County, which happens to be where Syracuse\u2019s official measuring station, Hancock International Airport, is located. Other parts of Central New York haven\u2019t had substantial rain in over a month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LWETCNGEMFERJLDLK6XREHNLBE\">Parts of Western New York, the North Country and the Adirondacks are considered abnormally dry, <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?NY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?NY\">according to<\/a> the weekly U.S. Drought Monitor report issued Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZRL24WTATVDA7NWVDZIQRCOSXQ\">Dry soil makes the air hotter, Larson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4WVU4OSCHZF3RBPKN3Y4DGLH4A\">\u201cWhen the ground is saturated and wet, a great deal of the sun\u2019s energy is spent trying to evaporate all that moisture,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen the ground is dry and arid, that tends to amplify the heat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q2BRUWOX5ZDETBSFRAS5IIZ4UI\">There\u2019s one benefit to the upcoming heat dome: It will steer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/08\/upstate-ny-should-start-to-see-some-relief-from-canadian-wildfire-smoke-thursday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/08\/upstate-ny-should-start-to-see-some-relief-from-canadian-wildfire-smoke-thursday.html\">smoke from the wildfires in north-central Canada<\/a> to the east and away from Upstate New York. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/crime\/2025\/08\/upstate-ny-under-health-advisory-again-wednesday-from-wildfire-smoke.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/crime\/2025\/08\/upstate-ny-under-health-advisory-again-wednesday-from-wildfire-smoke.html\">Air quality in Upstate<\/a> has been in the unhealthy zone nearly all week.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
