{"id":129047,"date":"2025-08-08T12:38:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T12:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/129047\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T12:38:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T12:38:10","slug":"parkinsons-link-to-gut-bacteria-hints-at-an-unexpected-simple-treatment-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/129047\/","title":{"rendered":"Parkinson&#8217;s Link to Gut Bacteria Hints at an Unexpected, Simple Treatment : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers have suspected for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-evidence-suggests-parkinson-s-might-start-in-the-gut-before-spreading-to-the-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some time<\/a> that the link between our gut and brain plays a role in the onset of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73029\" data-postid=\"170563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> disease.<\/p>\n<p>A recent study identified gut microbes likely to be involved and linked them with decreased <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riboflavin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riboflavin<\/a> ( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-are-vitamins-and-do-we-really-need-to-take-them\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73116\" data-postid=\"170563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">vitamin<\/a> B2) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biotin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biotin<\/a> (vitamin B7), suggesting an unexpectedly <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9wuwZbPf0Vs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simple treatment that may help<\/a>: B  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-are-vitamins-and-do-we-really-need-to-take-them\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73116\" data-postid=\"170563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">vitamins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Supplementation therapy targeting riboflavin and biotin holds promise as a potential therapeutic avenue for alleviating PD symptoms and slowing disease progression,&#8221; Nagoya University medical researcher Hiroshi Nishiwaki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/researchinfo\/result-en\/2024\/06\/20240618-01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> when the study was published in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-disease-might-not-start-in-the-brain-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parkinson&#8217;s Disease Might Not Start in The Brain, Study Finds<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The neurodegenerative disease impacts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/parkinson-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">almost 10 million people globally<\/a>, who at best can hope for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-is-the-first-time-drug-shows-signs-of-slowing-parkinsons-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">therapies that slow and alleviate symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms typically begin with constipation and sleep problems, up to 20 years before progressing into dementia and the debilitating loss of muscle control.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/changes-in-gut-bacteria-are-present-long-before-signs-of-parkinsons-appear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Previous research<\/a> found people with Parkinson&#8217;s disease also experience changes in their microbiome long before other signs appear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SHakingHandPIckingUpGlass-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hands picking up a glass\" width=\"642\" height=\"500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-131231\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Parkinson&#8217;s disease impacts almost 10 million people globally. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/photos\/MAEGCRiWJIk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pixelshot\/Canva Pro<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing fecal samples from 94 patients with Parkinson&#8217;s disease and 73 relatively healthy controls in Japan, Nishiwaki and team compared their results with data from China, Taiwan, Germany, and the US.<\/p>\n<p>While different groups of bacteria were involved in the different countries examined, they all influenced pathways that synthesize B vitamins in the body.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found the changes in gut bacteria communities were associated with a decrease in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riboflavin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">riboflavin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biotin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biotin<\/a> in people with Parkinson&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ParkinsonsGutBVitamins642.jpg\" alt=\"Graphic of human gut-brain connection and B vitamins\" width=\"642\" height=\"442\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145467\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>In Parkinson&#8217;s disease, a reduction in the gut bacteria of genes responsible for synthesizing the essential B vitamins B2 and B7 was found. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/researchinfo\/result-en\/2024\/06\/20240618-01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reiko Matsushita<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Nishiwaki and colleagues then showed the lack of B vitamins was linked to a decrease in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Short-chain_fatty_acid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short-chain fatty acids<\/a> (SCFAs) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polyamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polyamines<\/a>: molecules that help create a healthy mucus layer in the intestines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Deficiencies in polyamines and SCFAs could lead to thinning of the intestinal mucus layer, increasing intestinal permeability, both of which have been observed in Parkinson&#8217;s disease,&#8221; Nishiwaki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/researchinfo\/result-en\/2024\/06\/20240618-01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GraphicOfParkinsonsVitaminBConnection642.jpg\" alt=\"A graphic depicting the process of gut bacteria depleting B vitamins and leading to symptoms of Parkinson's disease\" width=\"642\" height=\"950\" class=\"wp-image-131227 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Summary of findings from the study and speculations from previous research. (Nishiwaki et al., <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41531-024-00724-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">npj Parkinson&#8217;s Dis.<\/a>, 2024)<\/p>\n<p>They suspect the weakened protective layer exposes the intestinal nervous system to more of the toxins we now encounter more regularly. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dry-cleaning-chemical-could-be-major-cause-of-parkinsons-scientists-warn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cleaning chemicals,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/two-pathways-to-parkinsons-could-point-to-a-single-way-to-prevent-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pesticides<\/a>, and herbicides.<\/p>\n<p>Such toxins lead to the overproduction of \u03b1-synuclein fibrils \u2013 molecules <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.nbd.2024.106411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known to amass<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-test-detects-parkinsons-7-years-before-most-symptoms-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dopamine-producing cells<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-pinpoint-exactly-which-brain-cells-die-in-parkinson-s-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">substantia nigra<\/a> part of our brains, and increased nervous system inflammation, eventually leading to the more debilitating motor and dementia symptoms of Parkinson&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/bjmbr\/a\/BM4WLJBtjxF8Cx3wFsjFhKb\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2003 study<\/a> found high doses of riboflavin can assist in recovering some motor functions in patients who also eliminated red meat from their diets.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s possible that high doses of vitamin B may prevent some of the damage, Nishiwaki and team propose.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/VitaminBInBlood642.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of a vitamin B2 molecule in the blood. \" width=\"642\" height=\"424\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-131228\"  \/>Illustration of a riboflavin (B2) molecule in the blood.
