Not everything is exempt. Items must qualify under the following rules of the state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifying items: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most shoes, clothes and school supplies are sold tax-free as long as they are less than $100. There is no limit on the number of eligible items you can buy.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifying school supplies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Binders<\/li>\n<li>Blackboard chalk<\/li>\n<li>Book bags<\/li>\n<li>Calculators<\/li>\n<li>Cellophane tape<\/li>\n<li>Compasses<\/li>\n<li>Composition books<\/li>\n<li>Crayons<\/li>\n<li>Erasers<\/li>\n<li>Folders \u2013 expandable, pocket, plastic, and manila<\/li>\n<li>Glue, paste and paste sticks<\/li>\n<li>Highlighters<\/li>\n<li>Index cards<\/li>\n<li>Index card boxes<\/li>\n<li>Kits*<\/li>\n<li>Legal pads<\/li>\n<li>Lunch boxes<\/li>\n<li>Markers (including dry erase markers)<\/li>\n<li>Notebooks<\/li>\n<li>Paper \u2013 loose leaf ruled notebook paper, copy paper, graph paper, tracing paper, manila paper, colored paper, poster board, and construction paper<\/li>\n<li>Pencil boxes and other school supply boxes<\/li>\n<li>Pencil sharpeners<\/li>\n<li>Pencils<\/li>\n<li>Pens<\/li>\n<li>Protractors<\/li>\n<li>Rulers<\/li>\n<li>Scissors<\/li>\n<li>Writing tablets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Items that do not qualify<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Items sold for $100 or more<\/li>\n<li>Clothing subscription boxes<\/li>\n<li>Specially-designed athletic activity or protective-use clothing or footwear (For example, golf cleats and football pads are usually worn only when people play golf or football, so they do not qualify for the exemption.)<\/li>\n<li>Tennis shoes, jogging suits and swimsuits, however, can be worn for other than athletic activity and qualify for the exemption.<\/li>\n<li>Clothing or footwear rentals, alterations (including embroidery) and cleaning services <\/li>\n<li>Items used to make or repair clothing, such as fabric, thread, yarn, buttons, snaps, hooks and zippers.<\/li>\n<li>Jewelry, handbags, purses, briefcases, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches and other accessories<\/li>\n<li>Computers<\/li>\n<li>Software<\/li>\n<li>Textbooks<\/li>\n<li>Framed backpacks<\/li>\n<li>Luggage<\/li>\n<li>Briefcases<\/li>\n<li>Athletic, duffle or gym bags<\/li>\n<li>Computer bags<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Online purchases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the sales tax holiday, qualifying items can be bought in-store, online, by mail or by any other means.
