{"id":129740,"date":"2025-08-08T18:41:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T18:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/129740\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T18:41:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T18:41:08","slug":"eight-bat-researchers-mostly-from-asia-and-africa-refused-entry-into-australia-to-attend-global-scientific-event-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/129740\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight bat researchers mostly from Asia and Africa refused entry into Australia to attend global scientific event | Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Organisers of an international research conference have criticised a last-minute Australian government decision to deny visas to eight invited researchers, mostly from Asia and Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prof Justin Welbergen, chair of the 20th International Bat Research Conference in Cairns, said the decision to deny the researchers entry without option to appeal had disrupted the event, which is a key forum for global collaboration on bat research and conservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the eight researchers from Kenya, Uganda, India, Pakistan and Georgia were \u201crecognised contributors to the global field of bat research and conservation\u201d. Among them is a well-renowned bat researcher who did his PhD in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The refusals came amid reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/couldn-t-care-less-about-free-speech-says-burke-on-blocking-dozens-of-visas-20250804-p5mk39\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the AFR<\/a> that the immigration minister, Tony Burke, had denied dozens of visas on the basis of social cohesion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When asked why the delegates\u2019 visas were denied, a spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs said it could not comment on individual cases for privacy reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAll non-citizens applying for visas to enter Australia are considered on an individual basis and against legal requirements set out in Australia\u2019s migration legislation,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis includes requirements that all applicants undertake and meet (where relevant) health, character and security checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The International Bat Research Conference dates back to 1968 and is held once every three years.
