Two hero cops who bravely battled a house fire in Queens and saved two sleeping residents last month were promoted at an NYPD ceremony Friday \u2014 as one of the officers called the daring job \u201ca calling.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Emergency Services Unit Det. Daniel Dongvort, 38, and Sgt. Bryan J. Vesely, 34, \u2014 who leapt to action, busting down doors and ushering victims to safety on July 16<\/a> \u2014 were hailed as \u201cthe best of the best\u201d by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch at the packed event at One Police Plaza.<\/p>\n Dongvort, who along with Vesely are volunteer firefighters in Long Island, said keeping a cool head was key as they burst into the burning home in Jamaica.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a smoke-filled environment. There\u2019s a lot of things that are kind of going through your head,\u201d said Det. Daniel Dongvort, 38, of Suffolk County, who was bumped up to Detective Second Grade Friday.<\/p>\n Det. I do think it\u2019s somewhat of a calling,\u201d\u00a0 he told The Post of the elite, 350-member unit<\/a>. \u201cI think you have to kind of have a knack for staying calm in high-stress situations.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an honor to be recognized,\u201d he said of the promotion.<\/p>\n Cops battled the blaze at a home in Queens. Obtained by the New York Post<\/p>\n Vesely, who was promoted to Sergeant Special Assignment, recalled finding a man and woman dozing in the basement of the blazing home.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a relief for us to be able to find them and get them out of there safely, knowing that\u2026there\u2019s no one else inside,\u201d he said. \u201cThey seemed grateful and thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n Vesely Dongvort were on patrol in ESU Truck 9 in Jamaica on July 16, when they smelled smoke and spotted it pouring from an attic on 229th Street.<\/p>\n NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the cops \u201cthe best of the best\u201d at a promotion ceremony.
