{"id":130410,"date":"2025-08-09T00:40:26","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T00:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/130410\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T00:40:26","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T00:40:26","slug":"ny-ag-letitia-james-subpoenaed-by-justice-department-over-454m-civil-fraud-case-against-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/130410\/","title":{"rendered":"NY AG Letitia James subpoenaed by Justice Department over $454M civil fraud case against Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0New York Attorney General Letitia James was hit with a pair of\u00a0subpoenas as part of a grand jury probe\u00a0scrutinizing a\u00a0$454 million civil fraud case against President Trump, a source familiar with the investigation told The Post Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Albany US Attorney John Sarcone convened the grand jury to address potential deprivation of rights allegations after launching an investigation of James in coordination with the FBI this past May.<\/p>\n<p>One of the subpoenas related to the civil fraud judgment won by the Empire State\u00a0AG\u2019s\u00a0office against Trump,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/16\/us-news\/trumps-still-waiting-on-ruling-of-454m-civil-fraud-judgment-appeal-sparking-debate-over-judicial-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which is still under review by the First Department appellate division<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.31788932;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36776957\" width=\"778\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/son-victim-kamal-bherwani-ny-109318949_a62cbd.jpg\" alt=\"Letitia James speaking at a press conference.\" class=\"wp-image-36776957\"  \/>James was subpoenaed as part of a grand jury probe into her office\u2019s $454 million civil fraud case against President Trump. Brigitte Stelzer<\/p>\n<p>A second subpoena reportedly\u00a0sought information on\u00a0James\u2019\u00a0own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/15\/us-news\/ny-ag-james-seeks-lifetime-ban-of-ex-nra-head-wayne-lapierre-monitor-for-guns-right-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigation of the National Rifle Association<\/a>,\u00a0along with other records.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, a grand jury in Virginia is examining whether to hand up an indictment against James for allegedly falsifying records to receive favorable loans on a home she purchased in Norfolk in 2023, The Post\u2019s Miranda Devine has learned.<\/p>\n<p>The Albany subpoenas were first reported by Fox News and the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American,\u201d\u00a0a James rep\u00a0said in a statement. \u201cWe stand strongly behind our successful litigation against the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association, and we will continue to stand up for New Yorkers\u2019 rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James had been a fierce critic of the 45th president\u2019s\u00a0administration and brought the civil case in 2022, claiming that the Trump\u00a0Organization inflated the value of its real estate holdings to get\u00a0favorable\u00a0loans and other financial perks.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s top cop and her supporters often professed\u00a0\u201cno one is above the law\u201d in discussing the case, which started with an investigation launched in 2019 while Trump was still serving his first term.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKeep up with today\u2019s most important news\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStay up on the very latest with Evening Update.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf average New Yorkers went into a bank and submitted false documents, the government would throw the book at them, and the same should be true for former presidents,\u201d the state attorney general had said.<\/p>\n<p>Upstate New York Rep. Elise Stefanik said in a Friday statement that James\u00a0\u201cis going to find out how true her own words are now that the DOJ opened a grand jury investigation into her abuse of power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DOJ\u2019s investigation into Letitia James is a vital step toward justice,\u201d the GOP congresswoman added. \u201cI will continue to fight to expose NY corruption, protect constitutional rights, and hold these failed Democrat leaders in NY accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte made the initial referral to the DOJ in April, alleging that James had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/28\/us-news\/watchdog-group-with-trump-ties-demands-state-probe-into-mortgage-fraud-claims-against-ny-ag-letitia-james\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cfalsified records\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to also receive favorable loans on a home she purchased in Norfolk, Va. in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic AG claimed the Virginia property was going to be her \u201cprincipal residence\u201d while serving as the top prosecutor in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Other\u00a0records show James\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/17\/us-news\/ag-letitia-james-calls-trump-admin-allegations-of-mortgage-fraud-baseless-interview\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">misrepresented the number of units<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0a Brooklyn brownstone she had purchased in 2001, Pulte claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The referral letter indicated that the actions could result in criminal charges \u2014 including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Pam Bondi said at the time of Pulte\u2019s letter to the DOJ: \u201cMs. James, for both properties listed above, appears to have falsified records in order to meet certain lending requirements and receive favorable loan terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a disaster for New York,\u201d Trump said of James May 6. \u201cShe\u2019s a horrible, horrible human being, and I think she\u2019s a total crook.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPam\u2019s gonna have to do what she whose\u00a0office later retained ex-Hunter Biden attorney Abbe Lowell,\u00a0has\u00a0accused the 47th president of being on a \u201crevenge tour\u201d since returning to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis appears to be the political retribution President Trump threatened to exact that AG Bondi assured the Senate would not occur on her watch,\u201d Lowell\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/24\/us-news\/letitia-james-unleashes-fiery-response-to-trumps-revenge-tour-in-wake-of-mortgage-fraud-accusations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote in a letter<\/a>\u00a0to the DOJ earlier this year. \u201cIf prosecutors are genuinely interested in the truth, we are prepared to meet false claims with facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James has joined other\u00a0Democratic attorneys general in lawsuits challenging Trump administration actions to fire members of the federal workforce and ban transgender procedures for minors.<\/p>\n<p>Albany Democrats tucked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/07\/us-news\/taxpayers-could-be-on-hook-for-ny-ag-tish-james-legal-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a $10 million slush fund provision<\/a>\u00a0into the state budget earlier this year to help New York officials cover \u201cany reasonable attorneys\u2019 fees and expenses incurred\u201d during probes not related to their employment.<\/p>\n<p>James\u2019 spokesperson has confirmed that the AG will use the state funds \u2014 as well as private ones \u2014 to fight the Trump administration\u2019s legal actions.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ declined to comment when contacted by The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The Albany US Attorney\u2019s Office did not immediately respond to a request for
