ATLANTA \u2014 Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a local hospital<\/a> after enduring what appeared to be a serious injury on Friday night in Atlanta, after which the Lions and Atlanta Falcons decided to end the game.<\/p>\n

Norris was hurt on the first play of the fourth quarter when he attempted to tackle<\/a> Atlanta running back Nathan Carter; his head snapped back upon colliding with Carter\u2019s leg.<\/p>\n

Players from both teams gathered at midfield<\/a>, holding hands and watching as medical officials attended to Norris and an ambulance drove onto the field. Several of Norris\u2019 family members came onto the field and, after he was loaded into the ambulance, followed on foot as it drove out of the stadium.<\/p>\n

The teams then let the clock run out and the game ended.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate word on Norris\u2019 status. However, Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the team received \u201csome positive information\u201d on the safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s breathing. He\u2019s talking. He\u2019s got some movement. They are running more tests,\u201d Campbell said. \u201c(Falcons head coach) Raheem Morris is a class act. He is the ultimate class act. We agreed it just didn\u2019t feel right to finish the game. That man is a class act, always has been.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campbell said that the decision to let the clock run out on the game was made quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them we are taking knees, they are and we are until this thing is over,\u201d he said. \u201cThe kid just wants to get better every day. I don\u2019t even know what else to say. We will have some team members stay back. We have some players who want to see him. I know his mom is with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just awful,\u201d said Lions quarterback Kyle Allen. \u201cYou sign up for football, you understand risk and putting your body on the line, but you never think something like that is going to happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve all played football our whole lives, and when you\u2019re on that field and see that, you understand how dangerous it really is out there. At the end of the day we\u2019re all football players.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as it happened, I just took a knee and started praying,\u201d said Falcons receiver Casey Washington. \u201cI know God is watching out for us. I know he\u2019s got a hand on him. I\u2019m praying for his mom and praying for his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Washington talked about the emotional scene on the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody on the sideline was just standing there and the clock continued to go,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was tough. All the players were affected by it. We have been playing this game since the age of 5 and to see something like that is tough to see, it\u2019s emotional. God bless him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NFLPA posted a message<\/a> of support for Norris, as did the Falcons<\/a>, who wrote: \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with Morice Norris, his family, and the Lions organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Terrion Arnold, Norris\u2019 closest friend on the team, offered up an optimistic note on social media, writing simply: \u201cHe\u2019s good all glory to God.\u201d<\/p>\n
