{"id":130833,"date":"2025-08-09T04:29:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T04:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/130833\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T04:29:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T04:29:11","slug":"belgian-foreign-minister-summons-israels-ambassador-over-cabinet-decision-on-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/130833\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgian Foreign Minister summons Israel&#8217;s ambassador over cabinet decision on Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Pr\u00e9vot announced Friday that he has summoned Israel\u2019s ambassador to Belgium, Idit Rosenzweig-Abu, following the announcement of the Israeli security cabinet\u2019s approval of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/israeli-cabinet-to-vote-on-plans-for-expansion-of-hamas-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plan<\/a>\u00a0to defeat Hamas, including controlling Gaza City.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Belgian minister said he wanted to \u201cexpress our total disapproval of this decision, but also of the continuation of Israeli colonization in the Palestinian territories.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Netanyhau\u2019s office said Friday that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will prepare for \u201ctaking control of Gaza City, while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It said that the forum voted on five principles: disarming Hamas, returning all of the living and dead hostages, demilitarizing Gaza, Israeli security control of the Strip and creating an \u201calternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said that in the coming days the IDF will deepen operational planning, while maintaining troop safety and endurance\u2014all with the goal of creating the conditions for the return of the hostages and the dismantling of Hamas\u2019s rule.<\/p>\n<p>By summoning the Israeli ambassador, the Belgian minister said he wants to show his disapproval of both Israel and the settlements, \u201cin particular the resumption of the E1 project east of Jerusalem and the desire to annex the West Bank recently promoted by the Knesset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Maxime Pr\u00e9vot, these are \u201ca series of actions that could potentially wipe Palestine off the map, which are unacceptable and contrary to international law, United Nations resolutions, and the decisions of the International Court of Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must vigorously advocate for a reversal of these intentions, which would permanently compromise any prospect of a ceasefire and a peaceful and lasting two-state solution, which Belgium has been insisting on for months, without forgetting full free access by land for humanitarian aid,\u201d the minister continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it is legitimate to want to destroy the terrorist group Hamas, this cannot be done through disproportionate operations that will further lengthen the already very long list of Palestinian civilian victims,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the Belgian minister announced that his country would support a partial suspension of Israel\u2019s participation in the Horizon Europe research program along with several other EU member states.<\/p>\n<p>The measure has been proposed by the European Commission in response \u00a0to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The Belgian coalition government has been unable to reach a common position on the Israeli-Palestinian issue. Within the government, the liberal MR and Flemish nationalist N-VA parties continue to reject the recognition of a Palestinian state.
