{"id":131229,"date":"2025-08-09T08:08:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T08:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/131229\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T08:08:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T08:08:15","slug":"see-the-squirrel-hole-chicagos-latest-concrete-rodent-imprint-nbc-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/131229\/","title":{"rendered":"See the \u2018Squirrel hole,\u2019 Chicago\u2019s latest concrete rodent imprint \u2013 NBC Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Move over, &#8216;Chicago rat hole.&#8217; There&#8217;s a new rodent hole in town.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;squirrel hole,&#8217; Chicago&#8217;s latest rodent impression in concrete, is hidden in plain site on a busy corner in the Loop. <\/p>\n<p>The concrete slab housing the impression resembling an outline of a squirrel, bushy tail and all, sits at the northeastern corner of Adams and State streets. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unknown when the &#8216;squirrel hole&#8217; first came to be, or how long the imprint will stick around.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8216;rat hole&#8217; in Chicago&#8217;s Roscoe Village neighborhood gained attention on social media in January 2024, leading locals to turn the imprint into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/2nd-chicago-rat-hole-going-viral-on-reddit-months-after-removal-of-previous-hole\/3523979\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/2nd-chicago-rat-hole-going-viral-on-reddit-months-after-removal-of-previous-hole\/3523979\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">makeshift shrine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>City officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/chicago-rat-hole-no-more-city-oddity-moved-to-new-location-after-being-deemed-damaged\/3419532\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/chicago-rat-hole-no-more-city-oddity-moved-to-new-location-after-being-deemed-damaged\/3419532\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">removed the concrete slab<\/a> with the &#8216;rat hole&#8217; a few months after it gained attention, after the Chicago Department of Transportation inspected sidewalks in the area and &#8220;determined they needed to be replaced because of damage,&#8221; the agency said.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/2nd-chicago-rat-hole-going-viral-on-reddit-months-after-removal-of-previous-hole\/3523979\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second, more mysterious &#8216;rat hole&#8217; <\/a>went viral on Reddit months after the first was removed. <\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;squirrel hole&#8217; and the original &#8216;rat hole&#8217; may share a common ancestor, as Lincoln Park Zoo&#8217;s Dr. Seth Magel, the director of the Urban Wildlife Institue, said there are signs the rat-like imprint was &#8220;much more likely to be a squirrel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The love Chicagoans have for these rodent impressions is undeniable.
