{"id":131527,"date":"2025-08-09T10:53:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T10:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/131527\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T10:53:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T10:53:09","slug":"albanese-and-luxon-urge-israel-to-reconsider-gaza-city-takeover-during-warm-generous-meeting-australian-foreign-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/131527\/","title":{"rendered":"Albanese and Luxon urge Israel to reconsider Gaza City takeover during \u2018warm, generous\u2019 meeting | Australian foreign policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Australia\u2019s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and his New Zealand counterpart, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/christopher-luxon\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Luxon<\/a>, have urged Israel to reconsider its plans to take over Gaza City and reaffirmed their intentions to deepen security ties, as they met in Queenstown on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Following a p\u014dwhiri (formal M\u0101ori welcome) at Te Wharehuanui \u2013 a private retreat built by the billionaire Xero founder, Rod Drury \u2013 Luxon said the world had become uncertain and fractious, and that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/newzealand\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a> \u201chas no greater friend than Australia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe two of us being able to come together to advocate for our values and stand up in the world and go out into the world together is really important,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese thanked Luxon and the local iwi (tribe) Ng\u0101i Tahu for the \u201cwarm, generous\u201d welcome and similarly pointed to the importance of the trans-Tasman alliance and being part of the \u201cPacific family\u201d amid global upheaval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere is one thing that is certain \u2026 Australia and New Zealand stand together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The welcome concluded with a boisterous hug between the two leaders. It is the pair\u2019s second annual meeting, following Luxon\u2019s visit to Canberra last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gaza and the topic of recognising Palestinian statehood loomed large, two days after the Israeli security cabinet approved a plan to take over Gaza City, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/08\/israel-cabinet-approves-netanyahu-gaza-city-takeover-plan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prompting global condemnation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Saturday, the foreign ministers of both countries alongside Germany, Italy and UK released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/09\/israel-gaza-city-takeover-plan-joint-statement-uk-germany-italy-new-zealand\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a joint statement condemning Israel\u2019s latest offensive<\/a>. Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/30\/palestinian-statehood-recognition\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand and Australia<\/a> cosigned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2025\/07\/new-york-call---joint-statement-of-the-ministers-of-foreign-affairs.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Call<\/a> \u2013 a declaration indicating the possible recognition of Palestinian statehood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking to media after their formal meeting, neither Luxon nor Albanese would confirm when a declaration of statehood might happen but said Israel\u2019s latest plans were \u201cwrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMilitary action, as we\u2019ve seen, is not the way to solve this problem,\u201d Luxon said. \u201cThe latest action from Israel we\u2019re seeing in the past 24 hours is wrong and risks violating international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Australians want to see a ceasefire, Albanese said. \u201cThey want to see the killing stop. They want to see hostages released. They want to see peace in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Both leaders rejected the idea that possible trade retaliation from the US president, Donald Trump, over recognising Palestinian statehood would affect their positions.
