{"id":131856,"date":"2025-08-09T13:53:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T13:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/131856\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T13:53:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T13:53:17","slug":"new-tiger-could-boost-endangered-species-breeding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/131856\/","title":{"rendered":"New tiger could boost endangered species breeding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Keepers at a zoo in Devon hope a newly arrived tiger could father multiple litters to help conserve critically endangered species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The three-year-old Sumatran tiger named Dao arrived at Paignton Zoo from Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The zoo said there were fewer than 400 Sumartran tigers remaining in the wild and Dao&#8217;s arrival marked &#8220;the beginning of an exciting conservation chapter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Lisa Britton, the head of living collections at Paignton Zoo, said the tiger&#8217;s young age meant there was &#8220;potential to welcome multiple generations of cubs over the coming years&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The International Union for Conservation of Nature said Sumatran tigers were critically endangered, and have held the status for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The zoo said the exchange with Ireland was part of the European breeding programme for endangered animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It said every pairing was &#8220;carefully planned to maximise genetic diversity&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Over the next six to 12 months, conservation experts would identify a genetically compatible younger female tiger to join him at Paignton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;With habitat destruction and poaching continuing to threaten wild populations, visitors can see conservation in action and understand their role in supporting these vital efforts,&#8221; Ms Britton said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Keepers at a zoo in Devon hope a newly arrived tiger could father multiple litters to help conserve&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":131857,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[746,159,67,132,68],"class_list":{"0":"post-131856","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science","10":"tag-united-states","11":"tag-unitedstates","12":"tag-us"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/114999145783357618","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/131856","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=131856"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/131856\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/131857"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=131856"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=131856"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=131856"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
